College of Southern Nevada - Sahara West - 11/18/2024

Dr. Lee had the opportunity to speak with an ESL Health Science Class about Wongu University, Wongu Health Clinic, and Oriental Medicine. It was a pleasure meeting all who attended. We want to express our appreciation towards Deborah Granger (Phlebotomy Instructor) and her class for their time.

In Poong, the Joseon Psychiatrist, on Netflix, Kim Min-Jae's character Yoo Se-Poong works as a royal family acupuncturist. He is entangled in a royal family scheme. As a result, he is expelled from the royal palace and starts working in the odd but lovely Gyesu Village. There, he runs into the village’s acupuncturist Gye Ji-Han (Kim Sang-Kyung). Yoo Se-Poong grows into a physician who treats both mental and physical illnesses in patients.

In Episode 1, Gye Ji Han’s son mentions their herbal inventory: Angelica root, Goji, Milk-Vetch root, Licorice, Deer Antlers, and Ginseng. It is so interesting to see a show displaying Oriental Medicine in practice. Check out the show on Netflix!

It is believed that dumplings first appeared in China during the Han Dynasty (206 BC–220 AD). Legend has it that Zhang Zhongjing, a Chinese medical practitioner, invented dumplings to treat frostbite in his people. He cooked a concoction of chilis, herbs, and ground meat after wrapping it in dough in the shape of ears so that the energetic shape of the ear will aid in curing the frostbite. It is customary in Northern China to eat dumplings during the winter solstice “Dongzhi” which is usually between December 21-23 of the solar calender.

A practitioner uses fire to heat a cup (made of glass, ceramic, bamboo, or silicone), which is then placed upside down on the patient's skin during fire cupping. The skin and muscle are drawn up into the cup by the vacuum created when the air within cools. As the blood vessels react to the shift in pressure, the skin may become red.

You can have your own fire cupping session using ceramic cups at Wongu Health Clinic or you can learn how to do it at Wongu University!
