“So this happened in Montana. I'm on my way to go to my interview this morning when I get pulled over by a police officer.

I am native American and my friend that was with me is black. Just saying.

Both brake lights decided to go out this time.

As he walked to the car and I was pulling out my stuff, he quickly said,

"Don't worry about pulling anything out. I just want you to know that your brake lights are out."

So I'm immediately upset, because I just got them replaced like last month.

So I explained to him how Firestone wants to charge me $600 just to run a test on the wiring of the car.

He looked at me like 😨 and told me to pop the trunk.

He checked the lights in the trunk and tapped them, but they didn't come on.

So he told me to pop the hood to check the relay box then asked me to get out to check the other one.

Then worked on the wiring under the dash.

He could've easily given me a ticket, but Officer Jenkins stepped out of officer role, and into mechanic role, and human role to make sure I was straight.

By the way HE FIXED THEM. Not everyone is racist, or a bad cop.”

“I know I recently shared about my son Nick and his special relationship with the Rosemount Police Department, but I just had to share a recent update about them because it's too good not to share.

About a month ago Nick received a personal invitation from one of his friends at the police department to our town's charity hockey game in which the Police Department and Fire Department play each other. Nick of course was very excited about that and began looking forward to watching his friends play.

The day before the game was to be played, Nick said he was called down to the School Resource Officer’s office at the end of lunch. He had no idea why he had to go there. When he walked in the office he said he was so happy to see not only the SRO but also Chief Dahlstrom and Commander Winters! They had a hockey jersey for Nick that was the exact same one that the police department would be wearing for the game! Complete with his last name and favorite number.

The story doesn't end there. About a week before the game I badly injured my left foot. I wasn't sure how I was going to manage the pain in order to take him. A few days after my injury Chief Dahlstrom reached out to me and asked if I would like for him to take Nick to the game. The obvious answer to that was, yes please! Nick and the chief share a birthday, and Nick was disappointed that this year they wouldn't be able to celebrate on their birthday like last year. Chief Dahlstrom then asked Nick if he would want to celebrate their birthdays a bit early by having getting picked up for the game by him and going together. Needless to say Nick was the happiest kid in town after that. Chief Dahlstrom picked him up before the game and off they went.

Nick was all smiles, and came home so happy as he told me all about watching his friends playing hockey and how much fun he had.

A few days later was Nick’s birthday, and I received another message. This time from Commander Winters! He asked if we had anything planned after school. Nick had softball practice that day, but it wasn't immediately after school. He asked if he could pick Nick up from school in one of their squad cars and take him out for ice cream. I knew this would make his day. So I got in touch with his case manager at school to let her know the plan so Nick wouldn't take the bus home.

The look on his face looks when I picked him up after practice, priceless. He had the biggest smile as he told me all about his trip to get ice cream.

Birthdays used to be so hard for him. But, thanks to his special relationship with our amazing police department I don't think that will ever be a problem again. His friendship with our police department isn't contained to within the walls where the department is located. They truly are his friends and love and support him as much as he does them.

Autism has made for a difficult path in life for him. But it's a path that is so much easier to walk when you have the support that he has in the Rosemount Police Department.

Pictured is Nick with Chief Dahlstrom and Commander Winters after the hockey game.”
