As a mental health provider and psychiatrist who prescribes medications, this Ted Talk resonated with me so much. Medication is only a very small part of treatment. I want each and every patient to internalize this fact:

“If you're depressed, if you're anxious, you're not weak, you're not crazy, you're not, in the main, a machine with broken parts. You're a human being with unmet needs.”

This is very much worth 20 minutes of your time.

You’ve probably heard over and over that exercise is great for your mental health, but at times motivation to get started is elusive. The best way to get motivated is to just get started! It will be well worth it. Baby steps add up over time.

Here are a few ways that we know exercise truly is one of the best natural antidepressants or anxiolytics:

➡️Exercise increases serotonin and brain-derived neurotrophic factor, both which are helpful in regulating/improving mood.

➡️Exercise reduces inflammation that can make depression worse.

➡️Exercise increases your level of endorphins, which help decrease stress and naturally lifts mood.

➡️Exercise helps improve sleep! Not getting enough sleep makes it very difficult for mood symptoms to improve!

We pet lovers already knew this, but there is data to back it up! A recent study from Washington State University has shown that even just 10 minutes of petting dogs or cats can:

🐶 Reduce levels of stress and anxiety.

🐶 Provide comfort to their humans who may be experiencing the effects of those agitating feelings.

🐶 Improve school/work performance.

If having a pet is not feasible, check out your local shelter and get your daily dose of therapy!
