Back Pain Explained from an evolutionary perspective!

Check out this quick Harvard Health Publishing article suggesting that "babying your back may delay healing" and
"Exercise and movement may be the best medicine for back pain".

"Movement seems to be the stimulus to normalize pain responses in the nervous system. Studies on animals with spinal injuries show faster pain resolution among those forced to exercise than among those allowed to move less." Dr. Rainville.

"This is probably the result of a survival mechanism," he says. "If an animal in the wild doesn't get moving, it is eaten or starves to death." Movement also seems to help people. "People who get moving — back to the gym, back to cleaning the house — do the best," says Dr. Rainville.

The Interprofessional Spine Assessment and Education Clinics (ISAEC) have hit the mainstream in Ontario, and small pilots are underway in New Brunswick and. This is THE niche for contemporary chiropractors, to play an integral role in spine care.

"But with ISAEC, they have another tool in their toolkit. They can quickly refer patients to community clinics where they are assessed by physiotherapists or chiropractors. These health professionals are trained to help w**d out the very small percentage of patients who might benefit from anti-inflammatory steroid injections or surgery."

It is estimated that 3-5% of patients who choose to work with a chiropractor first for back pain end up needing to be referred out for more invasive procedures. The vast majority of patients will experience relief and return to activities of daily life without the need for injections and NSAIDs.

Dr. Raj Rampersaud launched a pilot project that drastically cut wait times for treatment of lower back pain and changed how Ontario tackles the chronic complaint. He is one of 12 Canadians the Star is profiling who are making our lives better.
