On Friday, March 13th, just after midnight, the Capital Region welcomed a very special guest—two-year-old Bayarchimeg Galsandorj, who traveled all the way from Mongolia in search of life-saving heart surgery. She arrived accompanied by her mother, an interpreter, and a representative from Samaritan’s Purse, an organization partnering with Gift of Life to make critical congenital heart care possible at Albany Medical Center.
Following several days of medical evaluations and lab work, Bayarchimeg underwent surgery on Tuesday, March 17th to correct a complex condition known as Tetralogy of Fallot. As the name suggests, this condition involves four distinct abnormalities of the heart. Among the most serious were a hole between the two lower chambers—repaired during surgery with a Gore-Tex patch—and an obstruction restricting blood flow from the heart to the lungs, which was corrected by enlarging the affected artery with an additional patch.
Bayarchimeg’s initial recovery was swift and encouraging. However, she later experienced a rare complication that required the placement of a pacemaker approximately two weeks after her surgery. Thanks to continued collaboration with Samaritan’s Purse, arrangements have been made for her ongoing care. A cardiologist in Mongolia has been identified to ensure she receives the follow-up treatment she needs once she returns home.
Bayarchimeg recently attended the Rotary District Conference in Syracuse, where she quickly captured the hearts of all who met her. With her bright smile and playful spirit, she was truly the highlight of the event—a joyful reminder of the impact Rotary’s humanitarian efforts can have across the globe.
As Bayarchimeg prepares to return home next week, she leaves behind a community that has grown to care deeply for her. We wish her and her family safe travels and continued health in the years ahead.
