This week, from October 8th to the 14th, marks the observance of Fire Prevention Week. Throughout the week, we'll be sharing/linking you to valuable information which helps you proactively prevent fires.

Since 1922, National Fire Protection Association (NFPA)has officially recognized this important week. This year's focus centers on cooking safety. Surprisingly, cooking fires stand as the leading cause of house fires in the U.S. Join us in following Sparky The Fire Dog, who offers free resources to enhance your fire safety knowledge, available at https://www.nfpa.org/fpw.

Greetings, everyone! On this fine Wednesday, we're diving into another critical piece of equipment located on Engine 9-1: the positive pressure ventilation fan, specifically, a Super Vac.

This powerful device plays a crucial role during fire emergencies. It serves to either push air into or out of a structure once the fire has been extinguished. When we blow air into the structure, it effectively disperses smoke and heat, improving visibility and simplifying our firefighting efforts. And don't fret about figuring out the fan's airflow direction โ€“ it's designed to be firefighter-proof, featuring a handy arrow on top (see picture 2).

Curious about the difference between positive and negative pressure? No problem! Positive pressure involves actively pushing air into or out of a space, whereas negative pressure involves sucking air out. Think of it as blowing liquid out of a straw versus sucking it in for a drink. In certain situations, like confined space rescues, we may even employ both methods simultaneously to ensure a safe atmosphere for entry.

A heartfelt thank you for your continued support of the Dillon County Station 9 page. Stay tuned because we've got plenty more exciting content coming your way in the weeks ahead.

Greetings, everyone! Welcome back to another edition of Dillon County Station Nine's Apparatus Showcase. Today, we'll delve into the essential tools we employ for stabilizing vehicles during motor accidents. We'll be highlighting three key tools: 4 x 4 struts, step cribbing, and Hurst struts.

To kick things off, we rely on 4 x 4 struts (picture 1), each cut to approximately one foot in length, for a multitude of purposes. These versatile struts serve as wheel chocks, provide a sturdy platform for other tools like cutters or hydraulic rams, and are indispensable for preventing vehicles from toppling over.

Moving on, step cribbing (picture 2) takes the spotlight. This particular tool plays a pivotal role in the initial stabilization of vehicles. Depending on the situation, we position the cribbing with its steps either skyward or on the ground to ensure the vehicle remains firmly in its original location. Typically, we place one piece of step cribbing on each corner of the vehicle.

Last but not least, let's examine the two Hurst struts (pictures 3-7), which are on Rescue 9-5. These struts prove invaluable when dealing with vehicles in precarious orientations, such as being on their side. When combined with a ratchet strap securely attached to the vehicle, these struts help maintain the vehicle's center of gravity, preventing any unwanted movement and safeguarding both victims and responders.

By incorporating these stabilization tools in tandem with the additional equipment we've previously highlighted, we can efficiently extricate victims while prioritizing the safety of our dedicated responders.
