Greetings, everyone! Welcome back to another edition of Dillon County Station Nine's Apparatus Showcase. Today, we'll delve into the essential tools we employ for stabilizing vehicles during motor accidents. We'll be highlighting three key tools: 4 x 4 struts, step cribbing, and Hurst struts.
To kick things off, we rely on 4 x 4 struts (picture 1), each cut to approximately one foot in length, for a multitude of purposes. These versatile struts serve as wheel chocks, provide a sturdy platform for other tools like cutters or hydraulic rams, and are indispensable for preventing vehicles from toppling over.
Moving on, step cribbing (picture 2) takes the spotlight. This particular tool plays a pivotal role in the initial stabilization of vehicles. Depending on the situation, we position the cribbing with its steps either skyward or on the ground to ensure the vehicle remains firmly in its original location. Typically, we place one piece of step cribbing on each corner of the vehicle.
Last but not least, let's examine the two Hurst struts (pictures 3-7), which are on Rescue 9-5. These struts prove invaluable when dealing with vehicles in precarious orientations, such as being on their side. When combined with a ratchet strap securely attached to the vehicle, these struts help maintain the vehicle's center of gravity, preventing any unwanted movement and safeguarding both victims and responders.
By incorporating these stabilization tools in tandem with the additional equipment we've previously highlighted, we can efficiently extricate victims while prioritizing the safety of our dedicated responders.
