It may seem strange when your doctor orders a hand x-ray in addition to your spinal x-ray. Your hand isn't an issue, so why are we taking an x-ray of it? Recent research has found that looking at the growth plates in your hand (via x-ray) is a more accurate way of determining how much growth you have left. ⁣​​​​​​​​

This approach and classification system is called the Sanders Classification. The classification ranges from 1 to 8 and is based on the growth plates in your hand and wrist.⁣​​​​​​​​

Researchers are finding that this method of determining remaining growth and skeletal maturity is more accurate than the Risser sign, which is why many doctors are beginning to order hand x-rays.⁣​​​​​​​​

Starting off the week with some stable curves! We fit this patient with her WCR brace in December of 2021 and recently received her first out-of-brace x-ray since she started bracing. Her curves have actually reduced slightly, which is wonderful to see. ​​​​​​​​
​​​​​​​​
What's even more critical is that we held these curves steady as she hit her peak height velocity (PHV). PHV is when these kids "grow like a w**d." When they grow so quickly, their curves want to grow with them, and the only thing stopping those curves from growing is their brace. In this case, the patient and her brace did a fantastic job of keeping those curves in check! ​​​​​​​​
