Is skin to skin immediately after birth important?

After an uncomplicated birth the best place for your baby to be is on your chest searching for the breast. The benefits are immense.

The obvious benefit is establishing a long lasting bond from the first second. This soothes the baby and will comfort you.

Secondly it will aid in the immediate production of breast milk and colostrum which will nourish your child and protect her from infections.

Immediate breast feeding also secretes pitocin which contracts the uterus and greatly diminishes post partum blood loss.

If I’m on my period can I still come to my GYN appointment?

Yes, absolutely! There is a preconceived notion out there that you should wait to go to your GYN appointment if you’re on your period because it’s gross or because you cannot undergo a Pap smear while on your period. None of this is true!

No, it’s not gross at all for us to do a pelvic exam with blood in there! Periods are 100% normal and mean that your body is working and functioning properly.

If you are scheduled for a Pap smear and you suddenly find you’ve gotten your period that day, don’t worry! Pap smears can still be performed and yield an accurate result even when you’re on your period.

So don’t worry about rescheduling your appointment just because you’re on your period!

When will I feel my baby move?

This is one of the most common questions I get asked as an OB/GYN. The answer varies from patient to patient but generally speaking, you can expect to feel your baby move between 16 and 20 weeks. This movement is termed “quickening.” If you are a first time mom, you may first feel your baby after about 18 weeks as the movements are usually so subtle that they can be imperceptible.

What will it feel like?
Mothers that have had children before will know that the first movements are as soft as a gentle breeze inside your belly, a flutter of a minuscule arm or leg and then its gone.

Let’s talk open hysterectomies:

What is it?
A total abdominal hysterectomy (TAH) refers to the removal of the uterus through an abdominal incision very similar to a cesarean delivery scar. TAHs are becoming extremely rare as I prefer to perform every procedure via a minimally invasive approach (laparoscopically).

Why would My doctor opt for an open hysterectomy over a laparoscopic approach?
This procedure is reserved for an extremely large uterus that can only be safely removed through a larger incision. I performed this procedure last week on a patient who was in extreme pain as her uterus was well above her belly button due to large fibroids. The uterus was so large that it could not be safely removed via a laparoscopic approach. I had to amputate it and removed the cervix separately.

How long does this procedure take?
The procedure lasts about an hour and the patient was safely discharged the next day.
