Yesterday, Florida Memorial University commemorated its 147th Founders Day, a powerful reminder of the vision, resilience, and unwavering commitment that built this historic institution. The moment was made even more monumental with the official unveiling of my good friend President William McCormick’s presidential portrait. The students are blessed to have him and I look forward to assisting in the development of FMU’s brilliant minds!

Florida Memorial University for National Girls & Women in Sports Day alongside powerhouse athletes and leaders committed to the next generation. 💙🏆

I had the privilege of sharing my heart and clinical insight on athletes’ mental health, emotional resilience, and healing beyond performance. We talked about the real conversations anxiety, pressure, identity, trauma, confidence, and how emotional wellness shapes not only the athlete, but the woman behind the jersey.

As a therapist, clinical sexologist, and advocate for youth wellness, I believe strong minds create strong legacies. Our young women deserve safe spaces to grow, feel, and thrive, on and off the court/field.

Grateful to FMU Athletics for creating platforms where mental health stands beside athletic excellence. The future of sports is not just stronger bodies… it’s healthier hearts and empowered voices.

It was an honor to be part of National Girls & Women in Sports Day at Florida Memorial University, standing alongside greatness and engaging in real conversations about mental health, resilience, and emotional wellness in women athletes.

Grateful to Erica Wheeler, WNBA All-Star MVP and South Florida native—for sharing her journey with authenticity, courage, and heart. Her story is a reminder that confidence isn’t just built in the gym, it’s built in how we care for our minds and emotions.

Young women athletes carry a lot: expectations, pressure, family stress, trauma, and the demand to perform. Creating space to talk about mental health is not optional, it’s essential.

Here’s to strength, healing, and women showing up fully, on and off the court.

Dr. Thelma Tennie...

Thank you so much for visiting my Facebook Business Page and wanting to learn more about me and my passion to provide mental health services in marginalized communities, providing culturally competent therapy.

As a child, I was the youngest of six. I was the one that my older brothers and sisters would go to for advice or as the go-between and peacemaker between them and my parents. My childhood was rough dealing with a mother with a histrionic personality disorder and bipolar. My mother was also an alcoholic, so life was not easy and I struggled with her mental health as a child not understanding why she did the things she did. In 4th grade, I moved with my father and things were a lot better, not having to take care of and deal with her mental health issues and alcoholism made life a lot better for me.

However, my father was a very strict disciplinary. He didn’t accept anything less than an “A”, as far as school and academics, I was always encouraged and forced to read a book and do the best that I could. I grew up going to Catholic school and took speech lessons as my father was of Jamaican descent and because of this he was teased growing up in Washington DC. So, he made sure I didn’t suffer from the same things that he suffered from as a child. He made sure that education was the number one priority for me. Sadly, because of his upbringing, I was exposed to lots of drugs in the home and women. I could take a different route but, instead of living with my father kept me away from drugs and made me never want to use them.

As I grew to be an adult, I decided to do some self-work and pursued a Bachelor’s in Psychology which lead to a Master’s in Marriage and Family Therapy. All of the clients that were being sent to me had a common theme some type of sexual dysfunction or sexual abuse which led to other problems. This led me to pursue my Ph.D. in Clinical S*xology to better serve my clients. I am also currently working on my second Ph.D. in Marriage and Family Therapy. I have been told I am a career learner, “addicted” to school maybe. I’ll take the addiction to learn above all others.
