In September, 9Muses Art Center will close out our summer Perfectly Imperfect workshop series with The Marks That Made Me—a reflective, hands-on journey through memory, identity, and transformation.
Participants will gather for an evening of creative journaling and mixed media artmaking centered on the “marks” life leaves behind. Together, we’ll ask: What does a mark mean to you? Which marks are visible, and which are invisible? Can something that once caused pain become a source of beauty, wisdom, or pride?
Through writing prompts, members will explore both physical and emotional imprints—scars, stretch marks, tattoos, grief, milestones, and memories that continue to shape who they are. These reflections will then become the foundation for powerful visual art. Using canvas, paper, collage, stitching, and layered textures, participants will translate their stories into imagery, honoring the beauty in brokenness, resilience, and transformation.
As always, the heart of the workshop will be the community we create together. Some may choose to share their work and their stories in a closing circle, while others may find meaning in quietly making. Every voice, every mark, and every piece of art will be valid—messy or neat, tender or triumphant.
The Perfectly Imperfect summer series is a celebration of what it means to be human: shaped not just by what goes right, but by how we navigate the unexpected. We look forward to carrying the spirit of Perfectly Imperfect into the end-of-year exhibit.
