In honor of Nurses Week we wanted to hear from one of our special nurses on why she decided to become a nurse and what she loves about her job! Thank you, Ashley Hollman!

"I never wanted to become a nurse. Ha! In 2017 the Lord convicted me of my sinful state and saved my soul. It was on that day that my heart began to change and every day since has been a struggle between self and spirit. It was shortly after my conversion that I began to see the Lords plan for my life. While I don’t know every single part of that plan, the best part has been His blessing on my life of the calling that is nursing and His grace that He provides me every day.

The thing I love most about my job is doing my part to help the patients on their wellness journey. It’s always a bittersweet day on discharge because I’m both happy for them and sad that I will miss them."

We’re beyond grateful for our amazing Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) who make a difference every single day! They help patients improve communication, cognition, and swallowing—right in the comfort of their own homes. Thank you for all you do!

Here’s just some of what SLPs support:

🗣️ Communication Disorders:
• Aphasia (stroke/brain injury) – Regain speech, understanding, reading & writing
• Dysarthria & Apraxia – Improve speech clarity & motor planning
• Voice Therapy – Help with voice quality & volume (e.g., Parkinson’s)

🧠 Cognitive-Communication Therapy:
• Improve memory, attention, problem-solving & more after:
• Dementia
• Stroke
• TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury)

🥄 Swallowing Disorders (Dysphagia):
• Assess swallowing safety
• Recommend safe diets & strategies to reduce choking/aspiration risk
• Collaborate with nursing & dietary teams

💬 AAC (Augmentative & Alternative Communication):
• Set up and train on communication devices when speech is limited

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Caregiver Support & Environmental Modifications:
• Teach families how to support communication & swallowing at home
• Suggest helpful tools like labels and memory aids for daily life
