October is Medical Ultrasound Awareness Month, and we’re celebrating Erin Hoffman, RDMS, who has been a sonographer for 25 years and with the AIUM for 8Âœ years!

Erin always knew she wanted to work in the medical field, but after shadowing a friend who was a sonographer, she instantly fell in love with the profession. Now, she encourages others to shadow her so they can truly see what a day in the life of a sonographer is like. Her best advice for anyone considering this career? “Never stop learning. The field is always changing, and you can always learn something new.”

Erin also shared a fun fact—ultrasound gel isn’t just for comfort! It’s essential for creating clear images because sound waves don’t travel well through air.

As we celebrate Medical Ultrasound Awareness Month, we’re honored to highlight Kelly Phillips, RDMS, who has been a sonographer for 14 years and has been with the AIUM for 6. Kelly began her journey at the UMBC Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program, but her inspiration to enter the field started in a very personal way—after having an ultrasound during her first pregnancy. That moment sparked her interest in the technology and its impact, eventually leading her to work for the very doctor who performed that scan.

Over the years, Kelly has grown deeply passionate about her work. She emphasizes that sonographers do so much more than "just take pictures"—they’re highly trained professionals who understand anatomy, pathology, and how to obtain the best possible images to aid in accurate diagnoses.
