Heart Health Month: Heart disease remains the leading cause of death for women in North Carolina, and Black women are disproportionately impacted. The latest NCDHHS Health Disparities Analysis Report shows higher rates of heart disease, high blood pressure, and diabetes among Black women in North Carolina —conditions that often occur together and increase the risk of heart attack and stroke.
The good news? Prevention works. Nearly 75% of heart disease cases are preventable, and early screening and support can make a powerful difference.
That’s why NCDHHS partners with NC WISEWOMAN and the NC Minority Diabetes Prevention Program (NC MDPP) to offer free screenings, lifestyle coaching, and culturally responsive support for women ages 35–64 who meet eligibility criteria.
Knowing your numbers—blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol, and BMI—is an important first step toward protecting your heart and your future.

Did You Know? Each year, one in six Americans becomes sick with a foodborne illness. In North Carolina, outbreaks increase during the holiday season. NCDHHS recommends the following food safety tips to stay healthy this holiday:
1. Hygiene First. Always wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds before and after handling food.
2. Avoid Cross-Contamination. Keep raw meats, poultry and seafood separate from cooked and ready-to-eat foods to prevent bacterial spread.
3. Cook Thoroughly: Use a food thermometer to ensure meats are cooked to their safe internal temperatures.
4. Proper Food Storage: Refrigerate or freeze leftovers within two hours to slow bacterial growth.
For more information please visit For more information on foodborne illness prevention, visit NCDHHS' website at https://epi.dph.ncdhhs.gov/cd/diseases/food.html
Scotland County Health Department wishes everyone a Happy, Safe, and Healthy Holiday Season! Merry Christmas!

Did You Know? The signs and symptoms for the Cold and Flu can be similar, but are different too. They are both contagious respiratory illnesses, but caused by different viruses. The flu is caused by influenza viruses only, whereas the cold can be caused by a number of different viruses including seasonal coronaviruses.
The important thing to know is how to prevent the spread of these viruses as these viruses can be spread from person to person. How? Coughing, sneezing, talking or touching things that have the virus on a surface or object and then touching your own mouth, nose or eyes. That means covering your cough or sneeze into your elbow, wearing a mask if you need to, keep hand sanitizer nearby and wash your hands thoroughly with warm, soapy water often! Please visit https://www.cdc.gov/flu/about/flu-vs-covid19.html for more information about the similarities and difference between the Cold vs. Flu vs. COVID-19. And don't forget to get your flu vaccine annually from your provider or your local Department of Health and Human Services. (910) 277-2440
