💙 Looking Back: The Story of Scotty 💙
In 1999, the Scotland Memorial Foundation took on a special project—one that would leave a lasting impact on the health of our community. With a commitment to reaching residents where they live, work, and gather, the Foundation raised funds to purchase and operate a mobile health unit for Scotland County.
Scotland Mobile Health Care—affectionately known as “Scotty”—was the brainchild and heartfelt commitment of the late Joseph A. Walton III. During his tenure as Vice President of Business and Community Services at Scotland Health Care System, Joe made a tremendous impact on our mission of making the community healthier, especially through outreach and access to care.
Following Joe’s passing, the Walton Family established a memorial fund to continue his vision and dedication to community health. Because of that generosity and the support of so many others, Scotty became a symbol of compassion, service, and proactive care—paving the way for taking health services where the people are.
While Scotty is no longer on the road, Scotland Health continues that mission today by offering a variety of on-site screenings and mobile mammography services at community events, corporate events, and other scheduled locations. The spirit of Scotty lives on through these efforts—meeting people where they are and removing barriers to care.
Today, we remember Scotty not just as a mobile unit, but as a powerful reminder of what can happen when a community comes together with heart, vision, and purpose.
