Sitting vs. Standing: Whatโ€™s Really Best for Your Health? ๐Ÿช‘๐Ÿง

Did you know the average adult spends more than 8 hours a day sitting? That much sitting can increase your risk of:
Heart disease & stroke โค๏ธ
Type 2 diabetes ๐Ÿฉ
Dementia (for those 60+) ๐Ÿง
Even early death ๐Ÿ“‰
(Sources: Mayo Clinic, Harvard Health, National Institutes of Health)

But hereโ€™s the catch ๐Ÿ‘‰ Standing all day isnโ€™t the answer either. Too much standing can cause:
โš ๏ธ Varicose veins
โš ๏ธ Circulation problems
โš ๏ธ Increased risk of blood clots
(The Guardian, WVU Health Research)

The real solution is balance!
Break up long sitting with short bursts of movement:

Walk for 5 minutes every hour ๐Ÿ•’

Stretch during TV breaks ๐Ÿ“บ

Take the stairs instead of the elevator

Try โ€œwalking meetingsโ€ or pacing while on calls ๐Ÿ“ž

๐Ÿ’ก Even replacing 30 minutes of sitting with light activity can lower BMI and improve heart health!

โœจ Bottom line: Sitting too much is risky. Standing helps a little. But moving more, thatโ€™s the real key to better health.

๐Ÿ‚ September is Healthy Aging Month

Taking care of yourself is important at every stage of life.
Too often, we get caught up in raising kids, working long hours, or managing day-to-day responsibilities, and our own health takes the back seat.

But remember this: your health matters too. ๐Ÿงก Making time for routine checkups, eating well, and moving your body a little each day can make a big difference in how you feel as the years go by.

Here in the river valley area, we know itโ€™s not always easy, โ˜€๏ธ summers are scorching, โ„๏ธ winters can be bitterly cold. But finding small, doable ways to stay active indoors, keep up with your appointments, and focus on your wellbeing can help you stay strong and healthy no matter the season.

โœจ This month, take a moment to put yourself back on your own priority list.

๐Ÿš‘ ER or P*P? Letโ€™s Clear It Up! ๐Ÿฉบ

Did you know many health concerns can be treated by your Primary Care Provider instead of the Emergency Room? Choosing your P*P first can save you time, money, and stress, and youโ€™ll get care from someone who knows your health history.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Common reasons to see your P*P instead of the ER:

Cold, flu, or allergies ๐Ÿคง
Earaches or sore throats ๐Ÿ‘‚
Minor cuts, burns, or rashes ๐Ÿ”ฅ
Back pain or joint pain ๐Ÿ’ช
Stomach issues or urinary discomfort ๐Ÿšฝ
Prescription refills & routine care ๐Ÿ’Š

๐Ÿ’ต Hereโ€™s the difference:
A visit to your P*P is often much more affordable than a trip to the ER for the same concern. Why pay more when you can get the care you need close to home?

๐Ÿ•’ Did you know? Sometimes people go to the ER just because they canโ€™t get a same-day appointment with their P*P. In fact, studies show that 20โ€“40% of ER visits could actually be handled in primary care or urgent care settings. Thatโ€™s a lot of people spending more time and money than necessary for issues like sore throats, minor infections, back pain, or medication refills.

๐Ÿฅ When to use the ER:
Chest pain, difficulty breathing, major injuries, uncontrolled bleeding, or anything life-threatening, go straight to the ER or call 911. ๐Ÿšจ

๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ August is National Immunization Awareness Month

Did you know? โ“

1 in 4 Americans believe vaccines donโ€™t work or โ€œmake you sick.โ€

๐Ÿ’‰ The truth:

Vaccines have nearly wiped out deadly diseases like polio, rubella, and measles.

Mild side effects (like a sore arm or low fever) are actually a good sign, your immune system is building protection, not getting you sick.

Even a 10% drop in vaccination rates could trigger millions of new measles cases in the U.S. in coming years.

โœ… Bottom line: Vaccines are safe, effective, and protect not just you, but your whole community. Donโ€™t let misinformation put your health at risk.

๐Ÿ“ Talk to your provider, if you have questions.

๐Ÿ‘‚โœจ Why does your provider check your ears at every visit?

It might seem simple, but looking in your ears is an important part of your routine check-up! Hereโ€™s why:

๐Ÿ”Ž Detecting hidden issues โ€“ Ear infections, fluid buildup, or excessive wax can cause discomfort or even affect your hearing if left untreated.

๐Ÿฆ  Clues to overall health โ€“ Sometimes ear health can reflect allergies, sinus problems, or even balance issues.

๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€โš•๏ธ Part of whole-body care โ€“ Your Primary Care Provider checks ears (and other areas) to make sure nothing is being overlooked during your visit.

Even if you arenโ€™t having ear pain, routine checks help us catch problems early, before they become bigger concerns.

๐Ÿ’™ At River Valley Primary Care Services, we believe in caring for the whole you at every visit.
