Measles has recently been identified in Wyandotte County wastewater, per wastewaterscan.org. Wastewater samples are collected and tested to identify genetic markers for infectious diseases. The samples include everything from sewage to the water you spit out after brushing your teeth or the runoff from your shower.

“Wastewater gives us an opportunity to perform surveillance on emerging infectious disease and see it before it hits,” said Jill Hardy, LMH Health infection prevention manager. “It’s only a matter of time before measles hits our community.”
