2024 has been quite a year. As a millennial, it feels like weโ€™ve only ever lived in โ€œunprecedented timesโ€, I guess times are just precedented?

So I focus on what I do have control over.

A couple of years ago I dropped having a New Yearโ€™s resolution and opted for New Yearโ€™s intentions. Last year I intentionally focused on my friendships, and let me tell youโ€ฆI currently have the most powerful and impactful group of friends Iโ€™ve ever had.

What are some intentions you hope to focus on in 2025?

Yโ€™all, the way yesterday filled my cup. I participated in a panel at English High School in JP, and got the opportunity to speak with wonderful students about mental health for BIPOC communities. The organizers of the event were 4 brilliant rising seniors working closely with putting together a thoughtful set of questions. Iโ€™ve done a few panels before but I may have to say this was my favorite. I also had the opportunity to chat with some students after the panel got to connect with them on shared identities, lived experiences, and our favorite anime (Attack on Titan ๐Ÿซถ๐Ÿผ)

These last couple of weeks the work has been challenging and hard. But yesterday, I was reminded of why I do what I do.

Thank you Courtney aka for inviting me into this space! I hope to do it again.

There are people in your life that are just meant to be there. I had the pleasure of catching up with a friend who was an important person in my journey into social work. Larry has been someone who taught me about compassion and kindness in and outside of the non-profit world.

In the human services field, there is often a lot of chaos, a lot of policies, and a lot of debate on ๐˜ฉ๐˜ฐ๐˜ธ to do the work that we often forget ๐˜ธ๐˜ฉ๐˜บ we do it.

I am no stranger to feelings of burnout, feelings of hopelessness around social work, and questioning โ€œwhy am I still doing this work?โ€

I do it because of my core beliefs. I believe this world often times lacks compassion, and I want to provide it. I think this world sometimes can be cruel, and I want to be a reminder of the kindness that still exists.

Larry once told me โ€œif anyone comes in, see how you can help them, Iโ€™d rather you offer support and then learn we might not be able to support their specific need, than miss a chance to help someoneโ€. It was such a quick and small moment, Iโ€™m not sure if you remember, this, but this has stuck with me for so many years!

As the weather gets cooler & the days a bit shorter, we enter my favorite season, Autumn ๐Ÿ‚

This season is a transitional season, coming down from a very active summer, but before a busy winter, fall is a time to slow down and smell the cider.

This is the perfect time to reflect on what has gone well for you in the last few months, and how you can take care of yourself in these cooler upcoming ones. Seasonal changes arenโ€™t always easy for some; it can sometimes trigger seasonal depressive moods.

If youโ€™re someone who loves outdoor activities, think about some that you may enjoy indoors. If youโ€™re someone whoโ€™s a bit more social, how do you incorporate social time indoors?

Feel free to drop in the comments things you do to maintain your mental health during these seasonal changes.

Happy ๐ŸŒ Day

Some of my happiest moments have been in the outdoors or somehow connected with the earth. There is no โ€œperfectโ€ when it comes to doing to work to sustainability and living eco-friendly, but there is doing better.

I encourage folks to educate themselves on sustainability and applying what feels realistic.

The way we treat our earth and living more sustainably has incredible long term impacts on our society and so many of the systems we interact with on a daily basis (educational, political, socio-economic, etc).

Earth day is everyday because it is our home, I observe today as a reminder to continue to do better as a resident.

Feel free to drop some ways you love sustainably in the comments!

I am free of my student loans.

I repeat: I am free of my student loans!

After almost two years of intense financial sacrifice, the support of my wonderful partner, the encouragement of family & friends, and eye opening lessons learned from the pandemic, I have finally finished paying off my student loans.

For those of you who know me, this has been a big load to carry, especially since leaving the non-profit world, going into business for myself; forfeiting any chance of loan forgiveness.

Iโ€™ve cried, Iโ€™ve danced, Iโ€™ve laughed, and now canโ€™t wait to celebrate this accomplishment!

Happy Friday mi gente!
I wanted to pop by your timeline and just say hello, and remind you, you are doing your best. Also, I donโ€™t know who needs to hear this but, you cannot possibly everything or everyone 100% of yourself. You only get 100% total to give. Youโ€™re not a phone constantly connected to a charger. Thatโ€™s not real life. Different things will require different amounts of energy.

For example, if you start your day giving yourself, your morning routine, 10% of what you have to give, that means you have 90% to give to the rest of your day. Sometimes work will suck up 80% of that energy, meaning you may only have 10% to give when you get home to your family, pets, plants, and\or yourself. Keep in mind though, this doesnโ€™t have to be every day. You get to prioritize different things on different days. Sometimes work will take up 80%, sometimes your personal life will take up that much.

Expecting yourself to give everything 100% all of the time sets you up for feeling like a failure more often. (Failure is also a good thing, but we will save that for another post/lesson).

You are human, not a smart phone.
