While adaptive short term, this rewiring raises long-term risks of anxiety and mental health issues, highlighting the urgent need for early intervention.

Egocentrism is a natural aspect of young children’s cognitive development (thinking). Children, before approx. age 5 -7, may think they are the cause of everything they experience.

For example, if parents divorce, a 10 year old may think, “Yeah, they were fighting a lot”. But a (egocentric) 3 year old may think, “They got divorced because I am bad”. Even if we just speak to young children grumpily, they will tend to think that they are the cause of our grumpiness. That’s just the nature of egocentrism.

Just be aware of your ways of being around young children and of the events occurring in their lives. Understanding child development can help you be more understanding of young children.
