The 988 Lifeline is free, confidential, and provides you with judgement-free support. Knowing what to expect can make it easier to take that first step!
When you call, you’ll hear a brief menu of options:
- Press 1 for Veteran-specific support
- Press 2 for Spanish language support
- Or stay on the line to be connected to a live counselor at HeadQuarters Kansas, the local 988 contact center for Douglas County

From there, you’ll hear hold music while you’re connected. When a counselor picks up, they’ll introduce themselves, ask if you are safe, and listen. They’re there to understand what you’re going through, offer support, and connect you with any resources that may help.
