The Lawrence Advisory Council on Disabilities proudly recognizes Autism Awareness Month this April. It’s a time to increase understanding, celebrate neurodiversity, and promote acceptance for individuals with autism in our community.

This month reminds us of the importance of listening, learning, and creating communities where individuals of all abilities feel welcomed, supported, and valued.

🐰 Sensory-Friendly (All Ages) Egg Hunt

Celebrate the spring season with the City of Lawrence and the Benjamin Harrison YMCA! Kids can enjoy egg hunts for all ages, crafts, and maybe even a visit from the Easter Bunny! 🐰

Today, we celebrate a day that represents so much more than awareness. It’s a reflection of a community that shows up every day to support, uplift, and walk alongside one another.

Observed on March 21 (3/21), this day symbolizes the three copies of the 21st chromosome that individuals with Down syndrome have!

During the Common Council meeting on Monday, March 2, Mayor Deb Whitfield, officially proclaimed March as Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month in the City of Lawrence, Indiana - Government.

In partnership with leadership from the Lawrence Advisory Council on Disabilities, City Liaison Janette Jackson, and Board President Macy Pohl, the proclamation was formally presented to elevate awareness, celebrate the contributions of individuals with developmental disabilities, and reaffirm our shared commitment to ensuring they are included, accepted, and provided meaningful opportunities to learn, work, live, and thrive within our community.

The Lawrence Advisory Council on Disabilities, a Mayor-appointed council, was established not only to bring awareness to the disability community through dedicated observance months, but also to proactively identify and address barriers impacting the lives of people with disabilities in Lawrence.
