💊 September is Pain Awareness Month, a time to recognize the struggles of those living with pain and highlight the power of compassionate care.

At Affinity Hospice, we know that comfort and dignity are at the heart of hospice care. Studies confirm that hospice programs report 70–90% success in significantly reducing pain within the first week of care.

One study published through PubMed (National Library of Medicine, National Center for Biotechnology Information) followed 96 hospice patients and tracked their daily pain using an 11-point Numerical Rating Scale (NRS). Results showed:

The average pain score decreased from 2.58 on day 1 to 1.40 by day 7—a statistically significant reduction (p = 0.002).

Among patients who entered hospice with moderate to severe pain (NRS ≥ 4), the mean score dropped from 5.51 on day 1 to 1.76 by day 7—a substantial improvement (p < 0.001).

Meet Melanie! 💙

We asked Melanie to tell us a little bit about herself and her experience as an intake specialist.

"I have been here at Affinity since 2022. I have been in the hospice field since 2006, and functioned in several different roles over the years. During that time, I did leave hospice for a few months; but was drawn right back hospice and it is where I have felt I have been able to provide the greatest difference in the lives of our patients. During what can be the most emotional and overwhelming time in their lives, our patients/ families deserve support, dignity and respect. Helping them to have the best possible care with comfort and quality time with loved ones possible is what we are all about."

Dallis has been an intake specialist for 6 years; 2 of those years being with Affinity.

When asked, "What do you like most about being an intake specialist?", she said, "Helping families and building relationships with them, it warms my heart."

When we requested she tell us, "What inspires you about Hospice?", she stated, "Hospice inspires me because there is not enough education given to families about hospice and all the things we do to help the patient and there love ones. After my dad went on hospice 2 years ago it, it inspired me more to work only in hospice vs home health; so I can make a difference like they did with us when my dad was sick".

Meet Alishia! 💙

Alishia has been an intake specialist for 2 years and 6 months. A fun fact about Alishia is that she is quiet, but yet super silly! She loves to make people laugh. 😂

When asked, "What do you like most about being an intake specialist?", she said, "What I like the most is being able to help the patient's/families get the care they need."

When we requested she tell us, "What inspires you about Hospice?", she stated, "I am inspired that I am able to educate and let people know what Hospice and Palliative Care truly consists of. There are so many people who hear those terms but, they truly don't understand what the services can provide for them. Hospice was considered a bad thing when I was growing up. So, to finally understand what it truly involves is Awesome. And the fact that Our company can offer these services is even better".
