An umbilical hernia looks like a small bump around your baby’s belly button. It happens when a little bit of intestine or fatty tissue pokes through a weak spot in the belly muscles.

The good news? Most of the time, it’s completely harmless and closes on its own by around age 1–2, no treatment needed. Old tricks like taping a coin over it or wrapping the belly tightly don’t help and can actually make things worse.

Call us right away if the bump becomes hard, red, painful, or if your baby seems fussy or uncomfortable, those can be signs of a problem.

We keep an eye on umbilical hernias at regular checkups and only order imaging or referrals if there’s a reason to.

Got questions about your baby’s belly button? Mention it at your next visit or message our phone nurses through your child’s portal, we’re happy to help.

When your child isn’t feeling their best, start with the team that already knows them. Every child gets sick sometimes, but you don’t have to start from scratch with an urgent care that’s never met them.
At DVPA, our same day appointments and on site testing mean your child gets seen quickly by the doctors and nurses your child already trusts.

Cow’s milk protein allergy occurs when a baby’s immune system reacts negatively to proteins in cow’s milk.

Symptoms can include vomiting, diarrhea, rash, or fussiness after feeding. Both breastfed and formula-fed babies can experience this allergy, so it’s important to monitor symptoms regardless of feeding method. While some babies outgrow it, others may need ongoing formula changes or breastfeeding modifications.

If your baby shows signs of a possible allergy, send us a portal message to schedule an evaluation and discuss feeding options.

As we move deeper into fall, we’re still seeing a fair amount of hand, foot, and mouth disease in the office, while other respiratory viruses have started to settle down a bit. According to the latest report from the New Jersey Department of Health, emergency visits for COVID continue to decline, and levels of influenza and RSV remain low for now.

Based on the respiratory panel testing we’ve been doing through our office, many kids with what seem like ordinary colds are testing positive for other common viruses such as rhinovirus and parainfluenza. Still, as the school year hits full stride, this pattern can change quickly, so it’s a great time to double down on the basics: frequent handwashing and keeping hands away from your face.

Flu season is right around the corner, and now’s the best time to get ahead of it. Starting this Tuesday, we’ll be holding walk-in flu clinics every Tuesday from 3:00–4:30 PM, no appointment needed. Our first Sunday flu clinic of the year was a big success, thank you to all the families who came in! If you could not make it, our next Sunday flu clinic will be held on October 26th.

Even though flu activity is still low right now, it typically begins to rise in late October, which makes early vaccination the best way to stay protected through the season.

We’re also now offering the Beyfortus (RSV) shot for all infants under 8 months of age entering their first RSV season. RSV remains the most common cause of hospitalization in babies, so this new protection is a great step forward in keeping our youngest patients healthy.

We’re excited to share that DVPA will be at the Penn Medicine Princeton Hospital Baby Fair on Sunday, October 19th. If you’re attending, stop by our table and say hello!

And of course, October wouldn’t be complete without our annual Pumpkin Decorating Contest! Our staff is already hard at work (and maybe enlisting a little help from their kids) to create this year’s entries. Be sure to vote for your favorite pumpkin, every voter will be entered into a drawing for a gift card to the The Gingered Peach

As always, if your child is sick or you’re not sure whether they should be seen, just give us a call. Same-day sick visits are always available, and you can now self-schedule both sick and well visits through your patient portal.

Handwashing is one of the simplest - and most powerful - ways to stop germs in their tracks.

Teach your child to:
- Wash for at least 20 seconds (singing “Happy Birthday” twice works!)
- Scrub front, back, between fingers, and under fingernails
- Dry hands completely
- Wash before eating, after using the bathroom, and after coughing/sneezing

Make handwashing part of your child’s daily routine.

Safe sleep saves lives. Every nap and bedtime should follow these guidelines:

- Back to sleep: Always place your baby on their back.

- Bare crib: Use a firm mattress with a fitted sheet—no pillows, blankets, or stuffed animals.

- Room share, don’t bed share: Keep the baby in your room but in their own sleep space for at least 6 months, but the best practice is until 12 months.

- Avoid overheating: Dress baby in a sleep sack instead of loose blankets.

Have questions about your baby’s sleep setup? Bring a photo to your next visit so we can help make sure it’s safe.
