Gems of the Heart Prevention Program

Gems of the Heart Prevention Program An eating disorder prevention program where girls and their mothers come together to learn about nut

The primary focus of the Gems of the Heart (GOH) programs within the Manna Scholarship Fund, Inc (MSF) is to slow the growing eating disorder epidemic by promoting positive body image and self-esteem to mothers and daughters of all ages. Because research suggests increased awareness of eating disorders within the family reduces the likelihood an eating disorder will surface, GOH has created a relevant and fun environment to help reach this population. The Gems of the Heart parties involve mothers and daughters making jewelry in homes while hearing a prevention talk and engaging in question/answer sessions. Additionally, a bi-annual Mother-Daughter Tea Party has been created to in which the extra pieces of jewelry are sold. Furthermore, GOH adds to its list of programs a Gems of the Heart curriculum. This curriculum is an eating disorder prevention program that provides young girls with the knowledge and tools to become confident, healthy, and strong young ladies as they enter middle school. It is a nine-session program designed to fit with any situation or environment. Throughout the program the participants learn about important topics such as self-acceptance, positive body image, nutrition, physical fitness, and healthy communication.
