March is National Nutrition Month, a campaign of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics that emphasizes the critical role nutrition plays in preventing and managing chronic diseases, including diabetes. Despite this, the Academy reports that 86% of the public has never consulted a nutrition and dietetics professional.
Nutrition therapy for diabetes may be confusing for patients. Current evidence does not support a single ideal macronutrient distribution for blood glucose control. There is no universally prescribed percentage of calories from carbohydrates, protein, and fat that fits every individual. Instead, best practice emphasizes individualized nutrition recommendations based on goals, preferences, comorbidities, and lifestyle factors.
Incorporating a registered dietitian into the interdisciplinary care team ensures patients receive individualized medical nutrition therapy. RDs are uniquely trained to translate complex evidence into practical, personalized guidance and to help patients navigate
the overwhelming—and often conflicting—information about food and diabetes.Effective diabetes management requires a coordinated team approach, and the inclusion of an RD significantly strengthens patient outcomes.
