Announcements!

This year we have a special announcement and change in our scholarship awards. We have decided that our applicants have historically been so exceptional, that we want to double the prize fund. So we will be granting scholars $4k each. Split into two years. $2k year of acceptance. And $2k the following year if they remain in good academic standing as well as active stewards of the organization and mission of VAHPAG (Vietnamese American Healthcare Professionals Association of Georgia). We encourage them to continue to participate in our organization by volunteering at our events including the gala the following year and submitting at least two articles of their field of study for publication.

Bạn có biết đau lưng dưới là nguyên nhân phổ biến thứ hai khiến người ta đến thăm khám bác sĩ ở Mỹ không? Khoảng 60–80% dân số gặp phải tình trạng này. Đây cũng là nguyên nhân hàng đầu gây tàn tật y khoa ở những người dưới 45 tuổi. Chi phí xã hội ước tính từ 20 đến 50 tỷ đô la mỗi năm.

Vậy khi người ta nói “đau lưng dưới”, chính xác là khu vực nào? Thông thường, đó là vùng cột sống thắt lưng. Trong cột sống có các phần: cột sống cổ, cột sống ngực, cột sống thắt lưng và xương cùng (vùng mông). Cột sống thắt lưng - tức lưng dưới - bao gồm cơ, xương, dây chằng, khớp, đĩa đệm và dây thần kinh.

Một số nguyên nhân phổ biến của đau lưng dưới bao gồm: chấn thương, thoái hóa cột sống (viêm khớp ở khớp cột sống thắt lưng), co thắt cơ hoặc b**g gân, cơ yếu, béo phì, thoái hóa đĩa đệm (mất đi lớp đệm do hao mòn), thoát vị đĩa đệm, hẹp ống sống thắt lưng, vẹo cột sống, đau khớp cùng chậu và khối u.

Nguyên nhân phổ biến nhất là căng cơ và co thắt cơ, thường do tình trạng cơ thể yếu và không được vận động thường xuyên. Béo phì và lối sống ít vận động cũng là nguyên nhân rất thường gặp. Cơ thể chúng ta được thiết kế để vận động. Vì vậy, khi bị chấn thương, hầu hết các bác sĩ sẽ chỉ khuyên nghỉ ngơi trong thời gian ngắn, sau đó bắt đầu tập vật lý trị liệu - chủ yếu gồm các bài tập kéo giãn và tăng cường sức mạnh cho cơ lưng và cơ bụng.

Cơ bụng hay còn gọi là “cơ trung tâm”, lớn và khỏe hơn nhiều so với cơ ở lưng, giúp ổn định trọng tâm cơ thể tốt hơn. Các chuyên gia vật lý trị liệu thường tập trung vào việc tăng cường sức mạnh cơ trung tâm để giảm đau và cải thiện sức khỏe tổng thể.

Thoái hóa cột sống hoặc viêm khớp ở các khớp cột sống thắt lưng cũng là nguyên nhân phổ biến gây đau lưng mãn tính. Khi tuổi càng cao, các khớp bị hao mòn theo thời gian. Vật lý trị liệu vẫn là phương pháp điều trị tốt nhất. Tuy nhiên, bạn có thể hỗ trợ thêm bằng thuốc kháng viêm không steroid (NSAIDs) và thực phẩm bổ sung. Nếu tình trạng vẫn nghiêm trọng và ảnh hưởng nhiều đến khả năng vận động, tiêm nước cốt ngoài màng cứng (epidural) vào vùng lưng có thể giúp giảm đau. Phẫu thuật luôn là lựa chọn sau cùng và chỉ nên thực hiện trong những trường hợp nghiêm trọng.
