🔵 Labor Day Closure Notice 🔵

We will be closed today, Monday, September 1st, in observance of Labor Day. We hope you enjoy the holiday with your loved ones!

As we take time to honor the contributions of American workers, here are a few fun facts about the holiday, courtesy of The Oklahoma 100.

• The first U.S. Labor Day was celebrated in New York City on Sept. 5, 1882.
• More than 160 million Americans are part of the U.S. workforce today.
• Oregon was the first state to make Labor Day a holiday in 1887.
• President Grover Cleveland signed Labor Day into law as a national holiday in 1894.
• Labor Day is often called the “unofficial end of summer.”
• The holiday inspired the tradition of backyard barbecues and parades.
• Some credit Labor Day with launching the American 40-hour workweek.
• Canada also celebrates Labor Day on the same date.

At Dean McGee Eye Institute, we understand that vision plays a fundamental role in a child’s ability to learn and thrive. In fact, research shows that up to 80% of classroom learning is visual—from reading and writing to problem-solving and participation.

When vision problems go undetected, they can easily be mistaken for learning or behavioral challenges. A comprehensive eye exam may be the missing piece in your child’s academic journey. 📚👁️

👋 Hi, I’m Dr. Ralph Hester, proud to be featured in 405 Magazine’s Faces of Ophthalmology!

For over 30 years, I’ve had the privilege of helping patients see their best at the Dean McGee Eye Institute in Northwest OKC. One of the most exciting innovations I’ve witnessed is RxSight’s Light Adjustable Lens — a true game-changer that allows patients to customize their vision even after cataract surgery. 💡

With our integrated care model, we make the entire process smooth, personal, and focused on delivering the best possible results.

The Department of Ophthalmology has been awarded a $150,000 unrestricted grant from the foundation, Research to Prevent Blindness (RPB) 👏

“This grant will be critical to advancing our department’s scientific study of retinal degenerations, diabetic eye disease, infectious and inflammatory disease, and other conditions that can result in permanent vision loss,” says Dr. R. Michael Siatkowski, professor and chair of the College of Medicine Department of Ophthalmology and chief executive officer of the Dean McGee Eye Institute at The University of Oklahoma Health Sciences.

The funding was awarded based on the department's research activities, laboratory environment, and the qualifications of its clinical and scientific staff.

Great work, everyone, and thank you to Research for Blindness for your continued support!
