CBCT stands for Cone Beam Computed Tomography. These machines are able to provide information about many different aspects of oral health, including tooth structure, nerve pathways, bone health, soft tissues, and more. To obtain an effective 3D image, the machine rotates completely, taking hundreds of images in a matter of seconds. These images are then compiled in order to reconstruct a 3D image of the tooth structure and other components that make up oral health.

Apicoectomy is the standard term for endodontic surgery. This method is generally used as a last resort to save a tooth that has proven to be unresponsive to root canal therapy and endodontic retreatment. It is a complex procedure that may require extensive recovery times in order to protect the health of the teeth. It is important to note that root canal therapy and endodontic retreatment are generally used prior to advanced treatments, like apicoectomy.

A few of the signs that you need a root canal include:

- Discoloration of the teeth
- Sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures
- Severe pain whenever pressure is placed on the tooth
- Chipped or cracked teeth
- Swollen gums

Your dentist will be able to determine if you need a root canal. This therapy is important to effectively protect your teeth. When problems requiring a root canal are allowed to escalate, they can lead to abscessed teeth that can be incredibly dangerous to your health.

Endodontics is a specialized form of dentistry that focuses primarily on the inside of the tooth. A tooth contains multiple layers, so the inside, or pulp, of the tooth is generally protected. However, if the enamel and dentin layers wear down due to tooth decay or other issues, the pulp becomes exposed and particularly susceptible to sustaining damage. In these situations, it is often important to seek the services of a professional to most effectively deal with the issue. Endodontists are commonly consulted to perform an array of services, including root canals, endodontic retreatment surgery, and cracks in the teeth.

Root resorption is a naturally occurring process that happens to baby teeth. It occurs when the body essentially eats away at the tooth’s root surface. Cells can send signals to the tooth and bone structures that order them to either break down or rebuild. When this occurs with baby teeth, they eventually fall out and leave room for permanent teeth to grow. However, root resorption becomes an issue when it begins to impact permanent teeth in the mouth. It is difficult to determine the exact cause of root resorption, though there are many different things that seem to cause root resorption to occur.

Teeth that are cracked need to be treated immediately to prevent the cracks from escalating beneath the gum line. Early treatment can prevent extractions from becoming necessary. Whenever you notice a crack in your teeth, you should consult with your dentist immediately to minimize any escalation of the damage.

If teeth grinding has already caused serious damage or infection, a root canal may be necessary to save your tooth. During this procedure, your dentist will remove the infected or inflamed pulp, clean and disinfect the inside of the tooth, and seal it with a biocompatible material and adhesive cement. The tooth is typically capped with a crown.
