As many of you know, May is National Asthma and Allergy Awareness month. The very first allergy patient I ever saw was when I was a first year medical student. I spent time quizzing the patient on their life before seeing the allergist, my mentor Dr Tim Craig, and after getting treatment. I asked about her quality of life and really wanted to know the difference he made. She said it was night and day difference. We had a great conversation and told her I was considering doing this for a career so I really wanted to understand the impact. She then looked at me and said, “But why would you want to spend the rest of your life looking in noses?” I said, “That’s easy, I would much rather look in noses all day as opposed to looking at other places.” She laughed and i have kept looking in noses. Hopefully, I’ve been able to make an impact like my mentor did in her life. I love being able to change how the body interprets the communication it receives from the things it encounters from food to pollens to pets. There is another aspect of what we do in allergy and it’s this little thing called immunology. I also enjoy helping people who may have certain deficiencies or dysfunctions in their immune system ( and ) and try helping them live with more normalcy. .khan.md md .mommy

Ever wonder why some fresh fruits and veggies make your mouth itch and maybe even rash, but if they are cooked or processed you can eat them just fine? See my latest blog that describes this and what you can do. Top 3 take away would be 1. Get tested for environmental allergies 2. Consider treatment such as allergy shots or drops to treat the underlying cause. 3. Consult with your allergist. There is a shift from reactive management of food allergies to proactive. Gone are the days of strict avoidance as the only option. There is a recent article highlighting this from the Annals of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology. There are proactive choices now. I have said for many years, we (doctors) need to meet patients where they are and guide them to where they want to go. With food allergies there are many choices available.

I love this quote from the article, “…there is room for physicians and their patients to decide on a course of action that aligns with the patient’s preferences, values, and lifestyle. We are moving away from the traditional paternalistic approach to food allergy management to a partnership between the clinician and the patient and their family to identify the optimal approach for them.”

And we have CHOICES.
