Imagine facing a medical emergency in a rural village, hours from any substantial care. This is the reality for many in Chahal, Guatemala. For over 30 years, dedicated physicians and nurses from Holy Cross Hospital – Davis volunteer alongside the Utah Medical Outreach team to provide life-changing care.

On their last mission, the group of volunteers, led by Dr. Robert Treft, provided care for 3,000 patients and performed 46 operations. During this trip, they provided care to a nine-year-old boy with a cleft lip who traveled with his parents and a younger sibling for seven hours on foot, leaving at one in the morning to get to the clinic first thing. The family even made a brief stop at a market to get the boy new white socks to wear when he meets with the doctor. The care team remembers how proud he was of his new footwear.

It’s Be Kind to Humankind Week! CommonSpirit Health's guiding principle is Hello Humankindness, and we witness its power daily in the compassionate care by our caregivers.

Our Utah Market President, Jeremy Bradshaw, shared how a recent patient, who was unexpectedly hospitalized and frightened, was deeply comforted by a respiratory therapist's simple, reassuring words and a gesture of kindness. That small act made a world of difference.

How can we embrace kindness more fully? Jeremy Bradshaw shares in Deseret News how to embrace the mindset and why it's a powerful tool for connection and personal health.

Be Kind to Humankind Week is an opportunity to consider how we can apply the power of kindness.

As fall sports ramp up, it's important that if you have a student-athlete or support one, to understand the importance of injury prevention. Here are some tips you can share:

Rest
Make sure you're adding rest days to the schedule. Letting the body heal is important to having the energy to perform in future practices and games.

Wear the Right Gear
Gear doesn't only affect how your athlete plays, it also helps protect them and others from injury. Gear that is the wrong size or in poor condition can actually contribute to injuries.

Stay Hydrated Whether a sports drink or plain water, drinking enough fluids is important before, during and after games to avoid dehydration.

Warm Up
Warming up and stretching the body before practice or a game will help prevent injuries.

Listen to Your Body
If you are in pain or feel ill, stop, rest and address the issue before continuing. Learn more about ways to prevent sports injuries this sports season.
