When Aerika and Tim Bergin welcomed their twins last fall, they anticipated the possibility of a NICU stay. Doctors had prepared them for it, and the proximity of CommonSpirit Health Holy Cross Davis's Level 3 NICU to their Clinton home offered immense comfort. What they didn't anticipate, however, was the profound, heart-centered care that would transform their most chaotic moments into ones of peace.

Today, the Bergins are blessed with two healthy boys. Hear how it’s a testament to their resilience, but also to the unwavering support found within the walls of Holy Cross Hospital.

What do the Fall Equinox, which occurs today, and Vitamin D have in common? A lot actually! The body relies on sunlight to produce Vitamin D. And as the amount of daylight decreases, so does the amount of Vitamin D produced by our bodies. Vitamin D plays an important role in bone health, immune health, muscle function, and mood regulation.

Residents in the Salt Lake area will experience a decrease of more than 3 hours of sunlight per day between now and the Winter Solstice in December. According to Dr. Natividad Rodriguez, a family physician with CommonSpirit Health in Layton, during the fall and winter, you might want to focus on Vitamin-D rich foods, including fatty fish, mushrooms, egg yolks, and certain fortified foods, such as milk, packaged cereals, and yogurt. Your physician may also recommend taking a vitamin supplement.

As fall sports ramp up, it's important that if you have a student-athlete or support one, to understand the importance of injury prevention. Here are some tips you can share:

Rest
Make sure you're adding rest days to the schedule. Letting the body heal is important to having the energy to perform in future practices and games.

Wear the Right Gear
Gear doesn't only affect how your athlete plays, it also helps protect them and others from injury. Gear that is the wrong size or in poor condition can actually contribute to injuries.

Stay Hydrated Whether a sports drink or plain water, drinking enough fluids is important before, during and after games to avoid dehydration.

Warm Up
Warming up and stretching the body before practice or a game will help prevent injuries.

Listen to Your Body
If you are in pain or feel ill, stop, rest and address the issue before continuing. Learn more about ways to prevent sports injuries this sports season.
