If you think someone might be considering su***de, ask them. While it may feel counterintuitive or even uncomfortable, research shows that asking others about su***de reduces su***de risk. Try questions like:

• “Seems like something is up, wanna talk about it?”
• “I noticed you have been more withdrawn, are you doing okay?”
• “Have you had thoughts of su***de?”
• “Are you considering ending your life?”

“Asking the question does not increase the chances of someone harming themselves, it does the opposite,” said Matt Steinkamp, director of the Intermountain Employee Assistance Program (IEAP). “Someone asking the question provides the opportunity for the person to answer it. People feeling this way often feel shame or guilt for doing so or assume that no one cares or would care if they followed through with su***de. Asking the question opens up the opportunity to talk about how they are feeling. Asking the question shows you care and want to help. It can take the focus off the hopelessness the person is feeling and begin to focus on getting the support they need.”

At Intermountain Health, we believe that mental wellness is just as important as physical health—and that belief doesn’t end when Mental Health Awareness Month does. That’s why we’re proud to partner with organizations that share our commitment to supporting mental health in our communities year-round.

We teamed up with the Las Vegas Raiders and The Defensive Line to host “The Strongest Play – Winning the Mental Game On and Off the Field”—a free, interactive mental wellness field day for youth and families at the Intermountain Health Performance Center in Henderson, Nevada.

Intermountain Health, the Las Vegas Raiders, and The Defensive Line hosted a powerful youth mental wellness event in Nevada--featuring fitness, mindfulness, and real conversations to break the stigma around mental health. Discover how this community-dri...

Patients in a remote area of Fairbanks, Alaska, now have broader access to greatly needed cancer services due to a groundbreaking telehealth partnership between Intermountain Health and the Tanana Chiefs Conference (TCC).

The Telehealth Oncology collaboration brings comprehensive cancer care closer to home for Alaska Native populations across a vast and remote region. This is a group research shows, has a higher rate of cancers than non-Native Alaskans.

The TeleOncology partnership with Intermountain Health is designed to reduce travel time and expenses, allowing many patients to remain in their communities during cancer treatment and receive the best possible treatment and comprehensive cancer care.

After initial in-person oncology treatments in Fairbanks, many patients can continue follow-up care remotely, including some lab monitoring and telehealth consultations.

In an emergency, a few minutes can make all the difference. That’s why Intermountain Health teamed up with Utah’s largest school districts to teach staff the three principles of Stop The Bleed:

-Pressure
-Wound Packing
-Tourniquets

“Teaching people proper CPR for the last several decades has made a huge difference in saving lives and now Stop the Bleed training is aiming to do the same,” said Maranda Davis, RN, trauma services manager for Intermountain Utah Valley Hospital in Provo. “Providing our educators an opportunity to have a hands-on experience with tools is a key component to this training. It helps remove the hesitancy someone may have due to what they have seen in movies or on TV.”

Staff from nearly 90 schools in the Alpine School District gathered for a Stop The Bleed training course before school started, allowing them to be prepared members of the community should they be faced with an emergency situation.

Today we celebrate Luke Peterson, a nurse in our Emergency Department, who was recently recognized as a L.O.V.E. / Daisy Award recipient. Luke was nominated by his manager, Mike Cooper, and a fellow caregiver, Cade Chatterton, who praised Luke's leadership and dedication.

"Luke's contributions have been invaluable, and I believe his hard work and dedication make him a perfect candidate for [this] Award," said Mike.

Cade mentioned an experience where Luke helped him navigate the process for drawing up and delivering a medication he had not administered before as a new nurse. He said Luke was patient and helped ensure Cade double-checked his work to ensure the patient received the appropriate dose for their condition.

"I can't think of anyone better than Luke that deserves that award," Cade said.

Congratulations, Luke!

We recently had the opportunity to celebrate one of our nurses from our inpatient unit, Courtney Bearnson. Courtney received a L.O.V.E. / Daisy Award for the great care she provides to her patients on a daily basis. She was nominated by a patient who expressed gratitude for Courtney's care and compassion over multiple visits to the hospital.

"When she talked to me, she looked me directly in my eyes and listened, really listened to my questions and concerns. I had complete faith in her and trusted her implicitly to be my advocate ...

"Courtney deserves to be singled out for being a great nurse and a great person who really cares for her patients’ welfare and that of family members and for being a great example of the staff at Layton Hospital. I cannot express adequately the gratitude and appreciation I have for her, her professionalism and warmth."

Congratulations, Courtney!

For moms who delivered their first baby via Cesarean section, they may wonder if it’s safe to try for a vaginal birth after Cesarean or VBAC birth. Having a conversation with your trusted OB-GYN provider can help you know what the risks and benefits are to trying for a vaginal birth, given your past medical history.

"For the majority of women who’ve had a previous Cesarean section delivery, it’s usually possible to try for a vaginal birth,” said Dr. Darrick Peters, DO an OB-GYN with Intermountain Health's Layton Parkway Women's Health Clinic.

Watch Dr. Peters' recent interview for Baby Your Baby to learn more about the risks and benefits of a VBAC birth.

Kendra Manwaring, a nurse in our labor and delivery department, was recently recognized as a winner of an Intermountain L.O.V.E. / Daisy Award for being an amazing caregiver. She was nominated for the honor by a patient, who shared the story of their delivery and how Linsey made it a memorable experience.

"Kendra made an impact that cannot be overstated in my birth experience. I had a set of fears and anxieties from my first birth and a set of hopes and dreams for how my second delivery could be. Kendra helped me feel prepared to carry out my birth plan and also feel ready for any unexpected changes that could possibly happen and change my plans.

"I knew she was on my side and that she wanted me to have my dream come true. She did not try to let me down easily and share platitudes. She told me I could do it and that I was doing an amazing job throughout an unmedicated labor...

"Overall, she left me feeling like I could trust her recommendations and she would work just as hard to accomplish my goals for preferred birth experience as she would to make sure me and the baby came out safely."

Congratulations, Kendra!

Aiden Whitesides, of of our local phlebotomists, was recognized recently with a L.O.V.E. Award. Nominated by the parent of a young patient, Aiden was recognized for the extra time he takes to make his patients feel comfortable when they are nervous about getting their blood drawn.

Here's a portion of the patient's story:

"I know this is an easy example of 'just a blood draw' but it really meant a lot for Aiden to take such great care of my girl. I'm hoping next time she won't have to stress so much because of this experience.

"My teenage daughter had to get some blood drawn and she is terrified of needles ... Aiden called her back into the lab area and introduced himself. He asked her to have a seat and explained what he needed to do. He asked her if she wanted him to talk to her during the draw or to be quiet. He asked about which arm she would prefer. He was so calm and gentle, speaking very positively to her. I could tell she was still stressing out but she wanted him to talk so he kept talking through the blood draw and was able to settle her down. He was very patient and empathetic with her.

"As a mom, I really appreciated his calm demeanor and professionalism to get the draw done quickly!”

Congratulations, Aiden!

It's National Volunteer Week, and we are so incredibly grateful for the volunteers who help brighten the halls of Layton Hospital. From greeting patients as they enter the facility and assisting patients in wheelchairs, to playing calming music in our main lobby and providing cuddles to our newest patients in the nursery, they do it all with willing hearts and hands.

Thank you to our many volunteers, and to our incredible volunteer coordinator, Raquel Howard, who keeps them all busy with tasks to make their days at Layton Hospital meaningful!

Labor and Delivery Nurse Linsey Leavitt was recently recognized as a winner of an Intermountain L.O.V.E. / Daisy Award for being an amazing caregiver. She was nominated for the honor by a patient, who shared the story of their delivery and how Linsey made it a memorable experience.

This patient said, "My nurse walked into the room and introduced herself as Linsey. Ever since she introduced herself, I knew that she was going to take the best care of me...

"She made sure that I knew that I was in charge of everything I received and how everything went for my birth. She made me feel so comfortable by bringing in heated blankets when I got shivers, she always had water filled and by my bed and even gave my husband jobs to help make him feel needed.

"Not only did she take the best care of me, but she was also the best teacher. She went above and beyond by teaching me and my support people about everything she was doing. She would explain in great detail any medications she was giving me, she explained how my body was working to get baby down and out, she pulled out diagrams and taught us so much about labor and delivery.

"She answered every question we had. She made me feel like family and helped make [this] one of my greatest days ever. I will forever be thankful for nurse Linsey."

Congratulations, Linsey, and thank you for being such an incredible caregiver!

It's Valentine's Day this week, and this year we want to show some love to one of our incredible caregivers, Kristy Jones, who recently retired. Kristy spent 13 years at Intermountain Health finding ways to make the communities of northern Utah -- and eventually throughout all of Utah -- better. As a Community Health Manager, Kristy managed Community Health Needs Assessments and Implementation Plans, developed strategies to address health improvement, and built new ways to approach persistent issues in our communities.

“I love that we can do global work and reach across multiple communities,” Kristy said of her accomplishments. “The work that means the most to me, though, is the work with individuals where I can see the change we helped to create.”

Kristy has a lot of examples of creating that change, including providing life-saving screenings and preventative care to thousands of women at Women’s Health Connection events, or by educating students about how to prevent su***de through NUHOPE.
