Babies may be covered in multiple fluids at birth. Surprise, newborns are not born squeaky clean. Newborns can enter the world covered in blood, urine, amniotic fluid and vernix. Let's just be super clear here though that babies are not born dirty. Because the birth canal is not dirty. These fluids and healthy bacteria coat the baby and play an important role. Vernix or vernix caseosa is a thick cream cheese like substance that protects the babies skin from infections while in the womb. Once the babe is earth side Vernix can help with skin moisture, temperature regulation, and innate immunity. As birth doulas we often joke that we wish we could use this miracle substance as an under eye cream. Even the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends leaving vernix intact on the skin surface after birth.

I love what I do! There is nothing better then watching a person step into their own power. One that they never knew they had. I don't and can't do it for them, but I can support and encourage them.

to the First Mother?

The ten thousand secrets
whispered into your blood
by every woman
that came before you.

The blessings of your lineage;
how to know yourself
how to live a life
how to heal.

The burdens;
how to hold your tongue
how to carry your pain
how to pass it on.

You look just like your mother’s mother’s mother
