Wiconi Counseling Center

Wiconi Counseling Center Amazing therapists (LCSW, CSW) here for you! What is Wiconi? It is a Lakota Sioux word meaning "Life". Pronounced wee-choh-nee. Why Lakota?

I grew up in South Dakota and have always had family and friends in our home who are Lakota. I love the culture and I think the language is beautiful.

From The Daily Wellness newsletter:

This week's challenge: Write down the real reasons you’ve kept going lately, even the “silly” ones. To see how a show ends. Because your pet needs dinner. For tomorrow’s plans, however ordinary. Don’t judge them. Each one is proof that your mind is still finding anchors to the future.

Try this today: Write down the one thing you’re looking forward to tomorrow, no matter how small. Put it somewhere you can see. That's hope, doing its quiet work.

If you'd like, share here what you're looking forward to.

Notice the everyday anchors pulling you forward that prove that your mind is still choosing tomorrow...

From an email I read this morning from The Daily Wellness.

A small practice for today (takes under two minutes):

Name the tug. When you feel the “automatic yes,” pause and place a hand on your sternum. Notice: tight/loose, warm/cool.

Buy a breath. Say, “Let me check and circle back.” You’re not withholding; you’re choosing consciously.

Return with a truthful line: “I won’t be able to take this on, and I want to be honest early.”

Offer an anchored alternative (if you want): “I can review the deck for 10 minutes by 4 pm,” or “I can help next week.”

Reframe for the week: Not “I must be good to be loved,” but “I can be kind and still be real. The right people can meet both.”

Lots of misinformation and disinformation out there regarding crisis hotlines, especially 988. It's important to remember that 988 is STILL a viable option for ALL people who are in crisis and needing help. Unfortunately, the Press 3 option, that directed LGBTQ+ folks to crisis workers that could provide more affirming, informed care was eliminated. We are providing this resource for crisis lines that can and do provide culturally competent care for the LGBTQ+ community. It is not exhaustive, and we always recommend checking for local crisis lines in your area too.
*Also, that Canadian number that we've seen on several posts is a great resource, but it actually connects to the Canadian branch of the Trans Lifeline. Just fyi.

Thanks to our own Elizabeth Garrity, LCSW for creating this infograph.

✋ Let’s do a quick self-check-in together.

How long have you been scrolling? When’s the last time you had a sip of water? Are you holding tension somewhere in your body?

If your answers are: “Too long,” “I have no idea,” and “Everywhere,” it might be a sign that it’s time to practice a little self-care. Take a screen break, go outside, or call a friend - whatever you need right now, give yourself permission to do it.

Thanks for pausing with us. 🩵
