Moms and babies are dying all over the world due to lack of access to safe birth supplies and attendance. One million newborns die each year due to infections, and 287,000 women die each year giving birth. At FATM, we want to do everything we can to save lives of moms and babies throughout the world. This means sending safe birth kits out, and it also means providing transportation for those midwi
ves who want to serve service missions but need funding. Another problem right here in the US is the huge shortage of midwives of color. Babies of color in America die at a rate nearly three times that of their white counterparts. This is true regardless of health risk factors, parental education, neighborhood, and all other social factors. The only factor remaining is racism. We know that one of the ways this can be combatted is by providing culturally appropriate care by community midwives. Some of our causes include:
* Sending supplies and providing funding for safe birthing and midwife organizations that provide disaster relief
* Sending shelf-stable medications to foreign aid organizations to prevent death by postpartum hemorrhage
* Sending supplies and/or funding to other countries and US communities in need
* Supporting midwives willing to go on service missions
* Setting up an education fund for midwifery students of color
* Providing financial assistance to midwives of color to get their practices up and running or to promote their current practices
* Providing scholarships to midwives of color (and students of color) to attend MANA, the national midwifery educational conference
