We wrap up this month of gratitude by sharing some words from Terri Handy!

"I am grateful for the beauty of this place, the ability to hike, bike and ski right out my back door. It never gets old and I can look at Mt. Massive and Mt. Elbert for hours. As an employee of St. Vincent Health, I feel like I contribute to the community by promoting a healthy lifestyle and helping every one of my patients get back to doing the things they love to do. I very much enjoy being part of the LCHS family when I am there in the capacity of athletic trainer."

Terri is a wonderful asset to the community through her Athletic Trainer role at the school, and we are grateful that she is a part of SVH!

This November we are celebrating a month of gratitude and sharing what we are thankful for. Our AP & Payroll Specialist Zoe Bergstrom shares her thoughts below:

"I'm thankful for my partner, Ryan. He’s my best friend. I know we can always count on each other for support and he has been an incredibly positive part of my life. I'm also thankful to live in Leadville. I have lived all over and I can’t even begin to explain how happy I am every day to be in the mountains and have access to all of my favorite hobbies—hiking, trail running, skiing, rock climbing, etc."

We are thankful to have Zoe in living in Leadville too, and she's been an incredible asset to our team!

Theresa Rutkey has worked at St. Vincent Health for 25 years, since October 1998. Looking back she is thankful for having the opportunity to work locally in Leadville and build relationships with patients and co-workers.

St. Vincent Health is dear to Theresa; she feels strongly it is going in the right direction and believes the hospital and outpatient services are essential to the people who live and visit Lake County.

Theresa began working at St. Vincent in the Home Health department. She became a CNA in 2000. When Home Health closed in 2015 she worked at the primary care clinic, and now you can find her at the reception desk in Physical Therapy where she supports the therapists by handling the administration of the Therapy Services Department.

As a people person Theresa has enjoyed her roles and she values supporting patients in their healing process. “I work for the best department at St. Vincent Health – and I have the best coworkers,” Theresa said with a giggle.

10/18/2023

We are excited to be participating in the Pumpkin Project again this Halloween! For some kiddos, trick-or-treating can bring a lot of anxiety due to a disability. Some children may not have the language or physical skills to say "trick-or-treat", others may have sensory sensitivities that prevent them from wearing a costume, and some kids have severe allergies that prevent them from accepting candy. To help bring awareness to some of these differences in our kids, SVH will be distributing different colored pumpkin pails to help.

The pumpkin pails will be distributed at the Family Health Center registration desk starting Monday, 10/16 through Friday, 10/27 from 8am-6pm. We will also have some available at Trick-Or-Treat on Mainstreet on Sunday, 10/29! For more information, contact Rachel Griffin, OTD, OTR/L, ATP at [email protected], or call 719-486-7180.

After stroke, injury, illness or surgery, rehabilitation is often essential. This is when a person might turn to swing bed care, also known as inpatient rehabilitation. It's a funny name—but basically means a person "swings" from acute care to rehab care in an inpatient setting. This month's spotlight goes to our outgoing interim CEO, John Gardner! John joined us in August of 2022 with a loose plan of staying with us 3 months. Well, 3 months turned into 12 months, but we can confidently say that SVH is in a MUCH better position now. John received the following recognition from staff:

"Thank you, for stepping into your role at such a difficult time for SVH. We appreciate all that you have done and are currently doing to help this hospital and clinic get on a good path for success. You are appreciated!"

John, we will miss you. But we are excited for you to finally enjoy retirement!

Our Story

Nestled at 10,152 feet of elevation in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, St. Vincent Hospital is a Critical Access Hospital serving the rural area of Lake County and North America’s highest city of Leadville, Colorado. St. Vincent Hospital and St. Vincent Medical Clinic offer: Primary Care, Laboratory, Imaging, Physical Therapy, 24/7 Emergency Room and 24/7 Ambulance (call 911), 8 inpatient rooms, Swing Bed, Respite Care, Sleep Studies and visiting Cardiology.

In 2019, as St. Vincent Hospital celebrates 140 years of caring, we will begin construction on a new, state-of-the-art hospital. This is made possible by community and taxpayer support and a financial turnaround which is currently underway at St. Vincent General Hospital District (SVGHD).

Looking to the future, the district has embraced the concept of a health campus where specialists, primary care, Lake County Public Health Agency and other health related offices reside in the current hospital building and synergistic-ally complement services in the adjacent new hospital facility.
