I've said this to patients more times than I can count.

"Your body is the canary in the coal mine. It gives you symptoms to warn you."

Coal miners used to carry canaries underground. If the air turned toxic, the canary would show signs first, before the miners were in danger.

Your symptoms work the same way. Fatigue, disrupted sleep, hormones that feel off, weight that won't shift, these are not random. They are your body raising a flag before something more serious develops.

The tragedy is that most people are taught to silence the signal. A pill for the symptom, a label for the condition, a referral to manage rather than resolve.

That's what I wrote Magnificent by Design to give you, not a solution to your symptoms, but a framework for reading what your body is actually saying.

I've said this to patients for thirty-five years. And every time I say it, I watch something shift in the room.

Because most people are waiting. Waiting to feel bad enough to act. Waiting for a diagnosis to take their health seriously.
Waiting for someone to hand them a solution.

But health doesn't work that way. It never has.

The body is not designed to be managed. It's designed to thrive, when you give it what it actually needs. Clean food. Clean water. A mind that works with you, not against you. Movement. Sleep. A gut that functions. Relationships that restore you.

Seven laws. Thirty-five years of clinical evidence. One book.
Magnificent by Design is coming this week.

I was in college, studying engineering, playing football on weekends, when one hit changed everything. Separated shoulder. Pinched nerve in my neck. Pain that wouldn't quit.

I did what I was taught to do. I went to a doctor. The prescription came fast. Muscle relaxers. Painkillers. I didn't read the label.

One night I had one drink on a date. On the drive home, everything went dark. My date grabbed the steering wheel just in time.

When I got home, hands still shaking, I finally read the warning label.

Do not mix with alcohol. May cause drowsiness.

The doctor wasn't malicious. He wasn't incompetent. But he was trained in a system built to treat symptoms, not build health.

I flushed those pills down the toilet that night. Right then. Right there.

The next morning I went back to the gym. The owner sent me to a chiropractor, Dr. Mike Wichgers. One visit. My neck improved. My shoulder felt better. But what hit me most: for the first time, a doctor treated me as a complete human being.

That became my life's work. A different kind of medicine. One that works with the body's intelligence, not against it. Over thirty years of clinical practice built on one question: what does the body actually need to heal?

I spent 35 years finding the answer. It's in my new book — Magnificent by Design.

The brain is the most metabolically active organ in the body.

And like any high-output system, it generates waste. Damaged proteins. Metabolic byproducts. Inflammatory debris. These accumulate throughout the day as a natural consequence of neural activity.

During deep sleep, the brain activates a specialised clearance system called the glymphatic system. The spaces between brain cells expand. Cerebrospinal fluid flows through, flushing accumulated waste out of brain tissue. The process has been described as mental floss, a nightly cycle of neurological cleaning that prepares the brain for another day of optimal function.

This clearance is also when memory consolidation occurs. The experiences, learning, and information processed during the day get encoded into long-term memory during this same restorative phase.

Without adequate deep sleep, the glymphatic system does not complete its work. Metabolic waste accumulates. Over time, the proteins associated with neurodegeneration, beta-amyloid, tau, build up in brain tissue. The connection between chronic sleep deprivation and accelerated cognitive decline is not coincidental. It is mechanistic.

Sleep is not rest. It is an active biological process that your brain cannot perform any other way.

Protect it accordingly.

Struggling with sleep that never feels restorative? Book a consultation and let's find out what's actually keeping your brain from recovering the way it should.

Sleep is my number one non-negotiable.

A single night of insufficient sleep can cause a metabolically healthy person to exhibit blood sugar responses similar to those seen in pre-diabetes. Insulin sensitivity drops. Cells become less responsive to glucose uptake. The pancreas has to work harder to compensate.

This isn't a minor fluctuation. It is a measurable, significant metabolic shift, from one night of poor sleep.

Now consider that most people experiencing chronic metabolic dysfunction are also sleeping poorly. The relationship is bidirectional: poor metabolic health disrupts sleep architecture, and disrupted sleep accelerates metabolic dysfunction. The cycle sustains itself.

There is also the hormonal dimension. Deep sleep triggers the release of growth hormone, testosterone, and other repair and anabolic hormones. Without adequate deep sleep, these pathways are suppressed. Tissue repair stalls. Cortisol, which should be lowest at night, stays elevated, which further impairs sleep quality the following night.

Most people trying to manage their metabolic health are optimising their diet and exercise and overlooking the single most powerful recovery intervention available to them.

Sleep is where the body rebuilds. It is not negotiable.

Two heart attacks.
A stroke.
A broken leg.
A knee replacement.
A Parkinson's diagnosis.
Six medications, with a seventh on the way!

That's where Laverne was when she first came to see us.

What you're watching is a follow-up appointment, a few months into her programme.

When a patient comes to us carrying that kind of history, we don't chase the diagnoses. We look at the whole system. What is the internal environment doing? What does the body actually need to start working the way it was designed to?

One of the ways we assess neurological function is by asking the patient to draw a spiral. It's a simple clinical test, Parkinson's tremor shows up immediately in the quality of that line.

Months into her care, Laverne drew hers again.

It was perfect.

She left our programme on zero medications.

This is what consistent, root-cause care looks like over time. Not a quick fix. A genuine shift in how the body is functioning.

If you or someone you love has been handed a diagnosis and told this is just how it is now, it may be worth asking whether the whole picture has really been looked at.

The body rarely lies. It sends signals.

Infertility is one of the most significant signals the body can send about its overall state of health. Because reproduction is not a standalone function. It is the expression of a body operating with sufficient resources, hormonal balance, nutritional adequacy, and cellular vitality to sustain new life.

When those resources are depleted, when the system is under chronic stress, nutritionally deficient, hormonally dysregulated, or carrying a significant toxic burden, the body makes a deeply intelligent biological decision: this is not the right environment to bring a new life into.

Infertility treatments that bypass this signal with hormonal override can succeed. But they don't address what the signal was telling you.

In my practice, I approach infertility the same way I approach every complex chronic condition: by asking what the internal environment looks like, and what would need to change for the body to function as it was designed to.

The couple I worked with had spent tens of thousands of dollars on treatments. When we focused instead on restoring their health, nutrition, detoxification, hormone balance, cellular repair, their bodies did the rest.

Health creates the conditions for life. That is not metaphor. It is biology.

Your body has one job in a stress response.
Survive the threat.

Digestion slows. Detoxification takes a back seat. Repair processes pause. Every available resource gets redirected toward fight-or-flight, because in that moment, nothing else matters.

That's not a flaw. That's brilliant design.

The problem is that most people never leave that state.
When the nervous system is chronically activated, cortisol stays elevated. The HPA axis, the system that governs your stress response, loses its natural rhythm. And a body stuck in survival mode cannot simultaneously do the work of recovery.

Nutrients don't absorb properly. The gut lining becomes more permeable. Inflammatory markers rise. Hormones shift out of balance. Sleep quality drops, which drives cortisol higher, which disrupts sleep further.

The cycle sustains itself.

I see this pattern consistently in patients who are doing everything right, eating well, exercising, and still not recovering. The missing variable is almost always the nervous system.

A stress reset isn't a luxury. For many of my patients, it's the intervention that makes everything else finally work.

If you've been managing your health diligently and still not seeing results, it may be worth looking at what your cortisol rhythm is actually doing.

That's a conversation worth having. 📍 Houston & virtual consultations available. Link in bio.

Your cardiologist doesn't talk to your gastroenterologist. Your gastroenterologist doesn't talk to your endocrinologist. And none of them are looking at the full picture.

That's not a criticism of the individuals. It's how the system was built.

Conventional medicine trains specialists to go deep into one organ, one system, one symptom. The problem is that your body doesn't work that way. Your gut affects your hormones. Your hormones affect your brain. Your inflammation affects everything.

When I sit with a patient, I'm not looking at a symptom. I'm looking at a person, and every system that connects to what they're experiencing.

That's what functional medicine is. Not alternative. Not fringe. A more complete way of asking the question.

Thirty years of clinical practice has shown me one thing clearly: you cannot solve a whole-body problem with a fragmented approach.

Root-cause medicine doesn't compartmentalize. It connects.

If you've been bounced between specialists without real answers, that's not a coincidence. It's a gap in the model, and it's one we can work around.

People usually know where it hurts.

That doesn’t mean that’s where the problem is.

In this case, what looked like a sacroiliac joint issue wasn’t about weakness. The muscle tested strong. It simply wasn’t firing in the right pattern.

Pain location doesn’t always equal pain source.

When you understand how the body integrates hormones, reflexes, and mechanical stability, you can identify patterns most clinicians miss.

Joint pain can reflect hormonal burden.
Muscle inhibition can trace back to toxic stress.
Everything happening on the inside eventually shows up on the outside.

The question is whether anyone is looking beyond the surface.

If you’re dealing with chronic pain, PMS, thyroid issues, or symptoms that don’t quite add up, it may be time for a structured evaluation.
