UTMB Health is enrolling patients in a study evaluating the SIRA radiofrequency ablation device, an innovative technology designed for use during breast-conserving surgery.

This study will help investigators determine whether intraoperative ablation can safely and effectively reduce the need for additional surgeries and radiation therapy, with the goal of improving outcomes and the overall patient experience.

If successful, this approach could represent a meaningful advancement in breast-conserving therapy, offering patients a more efficient and streamlined path through treatment.

What Breah Knape believed was a migraine turned out to be the onset of a stroke.

When she arrived at UTMB, quick action from Dr. Young, assistant professor in the Department of Neurosurgery, helped save her life.

After weeks in the ICU and rehabilitation, Breah is now on the road to recovery. She credits Dr. Young not only for his clinical expertise, but for the encouragement and motivation he provided throughout her journey.

Today, she is getting back to herself. While she says she’ll miss seeing him regularly, she’s grateful for her health and the connection they built along the way.

"Digestive symptoms are common, but they shouldn't be ignored or silently endured," says Dr. Meryann Corzo, UTMB Health primary care provider.

Many digestive concerns are a routine part of primary care visits, and many can be diagnosed and managed without needing immediate specialty care. At the same time, UTMB Health providers are trained to recognize when symptoms may indicate more complex gastrointestinal, liver or nutritional disorders, ensuring patients are referred to specialists when appropriate.

Starting with a primary care physician ensures concerns are addressed early, with access to a broader network of specialists if needed. In many cases, that proactive approach leads to faster answers, more effective treatment and greater peace of mind.

Be proactive. Don’t ignore your gut—schedule an appointment with UTMB Health primary care physician. See more: https://utmb.us/fio

A colonoscopy is one of the most important screenings you can have and knowing what to expect can make all the difference.

This routine test helps detect colorectal cancer early and identify other digestive conditions.

Here’s what to expect:
• Some preparation ahead of time to help ensure accurate results
• A quick procedure, usually less than an hour
• Sedation to keep you comfortable
• Mild grogginess or bloating afterward, which passes quickly
• Back to your normal routine the next day

It’s completely normal to have questions, but understanding the process can bring peace of mind.

To learn more about colonoscopies, schedule your annual wellness exam and talk with your provider. https://utmb.us/fhx
