NOSSCR celebrates the 89th anniversary of the Social Security Act, which was signed into law by President Roosevelt on August 14, 1935. Today, Social Security is the bedrock of our social safety net, keeping millions of retired and disabled workers—and their dependents or survivors—out of poverty. More than 50 million Americans receive Social Security retirement benefits, nearly 9 out of 10 people age 65 or older. Social Security benefits represent about 30% of the income for Americans over age 65.
