If you have noticed, most articles relating to Adult Bullying do a good job of describing what it is, but not what one can do to stop it, diffuse it, or cope with it.
First of all, realize that people who Bully others are typically either not very intolerant of those who are different than they are, or are basically mean spirited, and narcissistic.
Here are a few tips on how to cope with these insecure Bullies.
1. Document your experiences with these people, by keeping text, voicemails, emails or social media posts. If legal issues come up, you will need these documents!
2. Try to find allies that will support you or back up your version of events.
3. Resist the urge to discuss the bullies actions with social acquaintances or family members who maybe actually be friends with the bully, or who just don’t have the time or inclination to listen to you. Instead find a trusted, experienced Therapist to discuss your situation.
4. Kill them with kindness! If you absolutely can’t convince the bully to change their tactics, change your attitude. It’s hard for a Bully to continue talking about someone who is continually friendly and kind. Others may decide the Bully’s fake news about you, is just not accurate.
5. Keep your head up high and believe in yourself. Don’t allow those who are envious of your accomplishments or secretly jealous of you to destroy your self esteem.
6. Surround yourself with positive people who are comfortable in their own skin who don’t feel the need to put others down. It takes time to really get to know people, so resist the urge to reveal too much personal information about yourself until you feel your friends or co workers respect you and are secure and well adjusted people. Don’t give potential bullies any ammunition!
7. If you can’t stop a bully at work or your boss is the culprit, start quietly sending out resumes and looking for a transfer to a different department, or a new workplace environment. Don’t talk to coworkers who may be afraid of the Bully themselves, and will throw you “under the bus” to further their own career.
Remember, most bullies are insecure, and may feel you have attributes they secretly desire! Don’t put yourself down or allow them to define you!
