In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Kirk McCullough has also strived for innovative considerations in and around sports medicine and the care of athletes/patients, ranging from improved operative techniques and implants, digital-based platforms for patient engagement in post-injury/post-operative therapy, and improvements in existing supportive devices such as orthotics, braces, and walker boots.
One of the interesting spinoffs from his work with high-level athletes and service on the NFL Foot and Ankle committee has been the consideration of improvements in athletic shoe wear. (www.caddix.com) and the SmartStuds™ technology now allows athletes with one pair of cleats to have necessary traction on all field types, yet allows for “release” so the cleats don’t get stuck in certain situations.
Considering options for possible injury prevention in basketball, Dr. McCullough’s work with (www.andiemup.com) and the Pivot 1.0 shoe aims to help minimize the risk of foot/ankle injuries with an innovative design that increases contact with the court and also helps to stabilize the foot/ankle within the shoe.
As always, there remains much more to learn and improve upon in the practice of orthopedics and sports medicine, and we are thrilled to continue to work with Dr. McCullough in providing improved care to all of our patients in the KC area and beyond.

A cleat that flexes could make a big difference when it comes to helping athletes prevent certain injuries.
