The STFM Foundation, which is the charitable arm of the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine (STFM), celebrates turning 50 years old this year! For a half century, the STFM Foundation has raised money to support crucial STFM scholarships, fellowships, and awards to sustain the future of family medicine education.

The training these funds provide have helped fill the academic family medicine pipeline with future leaders.

One such future leader is Anya G., a medical student at Georgetown University. She is a 2025 recipient of a STFM Foundation Medical Student Scholarship.

“Growing up on the East Coast and living in cities including Boston and Washington, D.C., I have witnessed the impact of health disparities, low health literacy, and distrust of the medical field on underserved communities. I would like to practice in an urban area to address these issues and provide individualized, culturally appropriate care. I am particularly passionate about serving my LGBTQ+ community, immigrant populations, and women. By participating in the 2025 STFM Conference on Medical Student Education, I hope to connect with mentors who can provide insight into navigating my path toward achieving these goals. While I know the populations I want to work with, I remain open to the journey of how I get there.”

Want to help celebrate STFM’s 50th anniversary and help fund other stories like Anya’s? Donate to our special fund: https://stfm.my.site.com/STFM/OrderApi__campaign?id=a0qPE00000B26FtYAJ&site=a0d1N00000HejpNQAR

On July 31, the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians launched a new campaign, "Family Physicians DO More," at familyphysiciansdomore.org. The campaign is geared towards the needs of high school, undergraduate, and medical school students to help them decide whether osteopathic family medicine is right for them.

This campaign is part of a 5-year project generously supported by two rounds of funding from the American Board of Family Medicine Foundation through its Family Medicine Next initiative. Despite the well-known benefits of family medicine, the shortage of primary care physicians is projected to be between 17,800 and 48,000 by 2034. To help attract more students to the field of family medicine, ACOFP proposed to "flip the script" by first listening to the needs of current medical students and letting their perspectives lead the way.

"Supporting the future of our profession is a key part of ACOFP's mission and one of my priorities as president," said ACOFP's 2025-2026 President Gautam J. Desai, DO, FACOFP dist. "I'm excited to see the impact this site will have and how we can leverage it to create enthusiasm for family medicine among incoming classes of students."

“To wait until someone says, ‘Oh my god, I’m drowning,’ it’s way too late. You have to start early and continue it all the way along the person’s career.”

Elisabeth Wilson, MD, MPH, MS-HPEd, joins Dean Seehusen, MD, on the final part of STFM’s podcast series with the Association of Departments of Family Medicine.

Drs Wilson and Seehusen unpack the differences between coaching, mentoring, and sponsoring. This is one of many insightful quotes from the podcast, “ADFM Lifecycle of Leadership Series Part 3: Cultivating Other Leaders”. Listen to these two academic family medicine leaders talk about how to cultivate new leaders and guide your department forward toward collective growth.
