Celebrating these warriors!

They often suffer in silence.

They may feel quietly uncomfortable as they see others posting about their successes, having reached or even surpassed their goals.

They have fought thru tears, joys and challenges and the very layered emotions that come along.
They may have made the decision to stop, it may have been a series of events leading to that decision or something in their life (medical, social or emotional) triggered the process of ending.

These women need to be celebrated, honored and heard!

They deserve a platform to share their story. So here I am giving them a HUGE HUG and letting them know I hear you, I support you, honor you and celebrate you and your journey.

You have a very special corner in my heart.

Share your story or celebrate yourself with a comment below!

Do you hear:

Don’t do.
Ooooh avoid.
You have to.
You can’t.
Fu***ng ridiculous!

You don’t have to be a different person or live a different lifestyle to successfully breastfeed. (pump)

Anyone and everyone can live their life as they always have while breastfeeding and not feel pressured to do things differently than you always have.

Worldwide everyone lives their life differently.
Why would it make sense to live in a box or be restrained by a certain way of life in order to breastfeed?

This ridiculous mindset is yet another barrier to breastfeeding.

Common myths I hear:

You can’t exercise or it will lower your supply
You have to drink TONS of water
You can’t drink alcohol.
You have to eat so healthy.
You can’t smoke ci******es. (does that one surprise you?)
You can never leave your baby.
You have to co-sleep, bed-share.
You can’t get a tattoo.
You have to drink cow milk (omg why is this one still around)
You have to eat so much food.
You can’t eat spicy food.
You can’t eat gaseous food.
You’ll can’t lose weight.
You can’t use facial and eye creams.
You can’t get botox.
Your medication isn’t compatible.
You can’t go tanning.
You can’t sit in a hot tub. (Yup heard that one)
You can’t drink caffeine.
Your breasts will never be the same. (newsflash that’s true whether you bf or not. Hello gravity and age)

The list is too long and it’s all BULL S**T.
My take home message for families is: Just be you. Do you. Don’t change a thing. Don’t be “a breastfeeding mom”. Be a mom who just so happens to be breastfeeding. Be your normal you.

This is my all time favorite fact!

Human milk is ALIVE!

It is a power-packed liquid!
It is designed to BUILD an immune system and be
THE MOST OPTIMAL FIGHTING
immune system.

As I’m always heard saying, “every drop counts”.

There isn’t an amount that is too small. Every Drop makes a difference.

Human milk is literally like a farm-to-table seasonally, fresh restaurant. The make-up of human milk is constantly changing in response to the surroundings and the baby’s age.

Whatever seasonal bugs are flittering around, the milk has specific fighters to go to war with them, so to speak.

The new growth baby is doing needs new milk!
That means what’s inside the milk changes! YUP!
The protein, the sugar, the fat, all the ingredients shift to give the baby the PERFECT food for that moment.

Lemme also say, that does NOT mean that milk from a different time (or donor milk) is not appropriate. Human milk from any time is always appropriate. It’s just more specific at that actual time.

No other food, or formula, evolves to meet new growth or illness needs.

So don’t overthink this folks and please don’t worry that milk from early postpartum won’t give the baby what they need at 6 months.

BUT during illness, the best milk you can give your baby is the current milk you are making.

Remember we want those specifically trained warriors fighting.

So...my point... Every (DAMN) Drop Counts!
Give your baby all the fighting power you can and be PROUD of every drop.

end note:

*Please let me be clear, this is NOT a formula bashing post. This is me sharing factual information. Formula has its place and many families I work with use formula and my job is to help them reach their feeding goals.

This is so very basic folks!

This needs to be on repeat and keep looping because people still don’t get it.

This is science, biology, physiological and not arguable.

Milk is made because we take it out.

Plain and simple.

Products that a company’s marketing department wants you buy so they make $$$ ... Dont trust them. They gain from your vulnerable state and how important milk making is to you.

STOP funding them.

Our breasts need frequent stimulation which removes milk in order to continue to make the milk.

Do we need Amazon delivery of a capsule, a cookie, a specially made drink, or whatever the F?

NO. Full stop.

How long have people been breastfeeding?
{Ahem since the beginning of time}

And suddenly NOW people need products in order to make milk or to make more milk?

What did folks do before people “sold $hit”?!
I’ll tell you what they did.

They trusted the process. They were surrounded by other women who supported them and knew. They kept nursing. Frequently. If pumping, they pumped. Frequently.

They did what we know works.

Save your precious $ and just do the thing your breasts need. Get the milk out and they will make more for you. Milk Removal = More Milk

If you think you have an under supply, before you do anything, call and meet with an IBCLC.

It’s not just about being interested in food and watching what you do or reaching for your food.
That does NOT mean their digestive system is ready for solids at all.

Those are EARLY signs but still means WAIT.

What can you do until all the readiness signs are there?

Keep them involved at the table. Give them something to play with that relates to food.
Utensils, measuring cups, spatulas etc

The American Academy of Pediatrics and The World Health Organization and The Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine ALL agree. No foods before 6 months.

Babies need the simple digestion of only human milk to keep them safest for the first 6 months.

Then as they are more ready we see these 5 things developing!

• I can sit up myself. So it’s safe to feed me food.

• have mastered the pincer grasp so I can pick up my food and feed myself. Like all other mammals, the young do not eat food until they can manipulate it themselves.

• Often I have a tooth too!

• I can crawl!

Human milk is the primary source of nutrition for the ENTIRE first year of life.

Foods are fun! They can explore in a low pressure setting. They learn how to get food down without sucking. New textures!

No need to worry how much they eat or don’t.
Just offer nutritious foods and let them be in charge of what they take in. Eventually they’ll be massive food eaters and your grocery bill will go UP!

KEEP breastfeeding and pumping just as often too, don’t change that up!

Remember foods are not a replacement for human milk. They are complementary.

1️⃣Human milk is one of the lowest in fat of the mammal milks! We don’t need to protect ourselves from the elements like other mammals.

2️⃣Nature is very smart. It makes species specific milk fore each mammal. Another mammal’s milk that is higher in fat, wouldn’t be appropriate for human babies’ growth needs.

3️⃣Human milk fat content varies between woman, between each child, time of day & differing stages of a feeding.

4️⃣Human milk fat content IS NOT dependent on a mothers dietary fat intake. Thank F goodness.
The Troubles we would be in IF that were the case, considering the general population and consumption of unhealthy fat and sugars?!?! Phew. Again. Nature is so smart.

5️⃣Overall VOLUME of baby’s milk intake is the
KEY. The contents are not up to us. That’s destined way back by baby during gestation.

6️⃣Human milk is crazy high in milk sugar.
Especially compared to other mammal milks.

Guess why?!?!?! Human milk sugar is what develops our sophisticated BRAIN!

So while other mammals are working on muscle growth (opposed to brains) as they follow along their mama, even immediately after birth (why they are called follow mammals)

We are developing our brain and can’t walk or follow mama until nearer ONE year after birth. We are called carry mammals. (Like marsupials and apes).

Carry mammals are the most immature of all the mammal world, completely dependent on the mother for food, warmth and safety. Hello science of attachment!

I hear this statement a lot and it’s just not true.
Maternal milk is perfectly sufficient. IF baby is not growing adequately we need not blame her milk.
We need more investigating. She needs to meet with an IBCLC. Is baby getting enough volume, how effective is baby at the breast and how is she managing breastfeeding/pumping?

This is one I can’t believe we are still having to educate folks on.

Basic human needs:

✅ Love.

✅ Comfort.

✅Touch.

✅ Trust.

✅ Kisses.

✅ Holding.

✅ Hugging.

✅ Connection.

✅ Empathy.

I get this question ALL the time.

Mostly because of the large misunderstanding of how breastfeeding works.

Things people say that are not right:

They have to at least nurse for 10 minutes or
they won’t get enough. ❌

5 minutes is too short. ❌

They should never nurse longer than 30
minutes. ❌

They have to nurse on the other side after the
first. ❌

If they nurse for an hour they must’ve gotten
a ton. ❌

What matters?

The Q U A L I T Y of the time spent.

✅ Are they transferring milk?

✅ Are they comfort nursing?

✅ Babies non-nutritive suck.

✅ AND nutritive suck.

✅ Both are healthv.

We want babies to do both types of suckling.

BUT

We need them to be efficient and effective; which means spending the majority of their time drinking and once done then comfort nursing.

l’ve seen a baby on the breast for 1 hour and has transferred drops. {This mom might be fasley reassured be baby is always nursing, but after watching I’d be worried}

A baby who transferred 5oz in 6 minutes. {Not joking}

The quality of the feeding tells me more than the length of time does.

That’s why WATCHING a baby feed will tell me more than how often they feed or for how long.

So many nuances to feeding...

Still blown away that in 2019 when I moved from my inpatient hospital practice, as a Lactation Consultant, to my private practice I quickly had patients!

Thanks BIG TIME to my colleagues: IBCLCs, Pediatricians, RNs, Midwives, OBs, Fam Prac Docs, doulas and former hospital patients. Those relationships that were built over those 10 years opened this door for me and I am so grateful for every referral you have given me!

A HUGE shout out to my current and former families who continue to generously send people my way.

6.5 years later, I remain honored to be your choice to take care of these families. It is the highest compliment and know that I take precious care of every family!

Any new or expecting mom, I implore you to read my article. Whether you want to succeed or have had a prior experience that was not what you wanted, read this and share with those you care about.

I bet it makes all the difference.

Intro…

“Awaiting this precious baby's entry into your world, you sit with a mind full of stories from friends and family about their struggles with breastfeeding, pumping and milk supply. "My ni***es hurt so bad," "| couldn't make enough milk," "My baby never latched,' "They told me my milk was low calorie and didn't have enough fat," "My postpartum depression and anxiety was unreal and I couldn't enjoy my baby so they suggested weaning," "I was told the medication I needed was contraindicated with breastfeeding." Do those sound familiar?

These stories are heartbreakingly real and common among moms I work with to get them on track. I'm going to discuss ways to avoid common pitfalls so these stories don't become your own…”

Many now know that proper fl**ge fit is essential to pumping success. That means we have to actually measure the diameter of each ni**le and explore sizes. And often that means the fl**ge is only a couple of mm larger than the actual ni**le size.

I’m also hearing.... I’m using a 16mm ni**le shield bc I measured a 15mm....or | use a 17mm fl**ge
I use 20mm fl**ges so 1 got a 20mm ni**le shield. Since 24mm fl**ges are too big for most I assumed 24mm ni**le shields are too big as well.”

Pumps help express milk without a baby’s suckle.

Ni**le shields are used while the baby is directly suckling at the breast.

TWO very different things.

In most instances, we want a ni**le shield that is larger than ni**le diameter!! Why?

Because when the diameter of the ni**le shield shaft is larger, it helps to encourage a WIDER latch. KEY! Voila!

Bigger mouth! We breastfeed not ni**le-feed hence why latch is so important.

Smaller diameter ni**le shields force a narrow gape (aka latch). (Smallest ni**le shield is 16mm, next up is 20mm)

Most babies, even premature or eensy peanut babes, CAN open wide enough for a 24mm ni**le shield. I’ve seen it several hundreds of times.
They latch deeper and are able to express the breast as opposed to narrowly ni**le feed.

Does this apply to everyone? No. Does it mean that if you’re using a smaller ni**le shield and everything is going WELL that you need to change? No. Of course not.

If something is working for you, no need to change anything.

This just needed to be said with all the new info on fl**ges.

What is Done Naturally

Done Naturally encompasses how many things should be, in Summer’s eyes. And often done a lot simpler and easier than our society makes people believe. Done Naturally was founded by Summer in April 2004. Working as a (now former) Childbirth Teacher in The Bradley Method of Natural Childbirth, she worked with hundreds of families over her 14 years of teaching. She is an International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant with over 10 years experience of working in hospitals in the NICU, Postpartum, and Labor/Delivery as their primary Lactation Consultant. Summer has also been a Accredited La Leche League Leader since 2006. Summer is a passionate advocate for families, and an expert in pregnancy, childbirth, lactation and parenting. Have 3 teen children herself, and also another teen step-son, she is surrounded by activity. She is an active speaker, and vlogger on YouTube, where she records videos for families on topics surrounded her expertise. She believes this is a great way for families today to have access to accurate information and be able to support them in their home, even in the dark hours of night. Summer’s private practice is where she is able to give individual attention, meeting moms in their homes, for any lactation needs, speaking on the phone, or video for needs that are appropriate and to connect with women outside of the KC area. Anyone can contact her for personal needs, including in-home consults, phone or video consults, prenatal breastfeeding classes or other specific needs.

Here you’ll find her YouTube vlogs, posted new each week, and also find supportive information.
