R I T U A L and R E S I S T A N C E.

The thermometer reads 8 degrees. My body feels the snap of the cold wind ("feels like -11") when I step outside. My body is resisting the air, muscles clenching, nose twitching. My mind tells me, "I am not meant for this cold."🥶

Our systems do not support our bodies' resistance, we are asked to show up no matter the temperature. And yet, now more than ever, we must care for ourselves with as much tenderness as we can access. Perhaps this is how we choose to resist? 💪🏼

What would it look like if we chose rituals to support our bodies' natural desire to slow in this season, our minds' desire to reflect, and our hearts' need to feel?

Consider these rituals, with ❤️:

🍵 Feel the steam of hot tea rise from your cup and warm your face.

đź“– Read a poem, over and over, slowly and with intention. (I recommend or or .trommer)

🕯️ Turn off overhead lights when the sun sets, light candles, and use lamplight.

In peace, Katie. ✌🏻

Today is my birthday. I am 41. My eldest son recently looked at me as I tied my hair back and gasped, “Mooooom, your hair is so gray.” I replied and said, “I know! Don’t you love it?” He does not (ha!) but I do! For me, my gray symbolizes wild tales, hardships and hard losses, lessons learned, nights awake with crying babes, wisdom and adventure. Today my gray is my glimmer. Here’s to another lap around the sun! 🥂👵🏻✨

A glimmer is a moment that brings about calm, connection, and perhaps a sense of joy. We feel glimmers in our bodies, maybe manifesting as a smile or a sigh, sometimes the glimmer at present reminds our bodies and minds of a time when we felt similarly. Soak it up, don’t let it
pass you by.

On Saturday, my son and I took a walk, and in his 5-year-old enthusiasm he suggested we roll down a hill. “OK,” I said, “let’s do it.” As I watched his body tumble hilariously down the hill, I was transported back to my own childhood. For four years, I lived on the campus of a boarding school in New England as a child of a faculty member. We would eat dinner in the dining hall
with the students and other faculty families and afterwards, the faculty kids would gather and play. There was this hill and in my memory it’s totally epic–steep, a little scary, and totally fun.

So, as I watched my son tumble down the hill, hearing him giggle the whole way down, my body warmed, my smile grew, and I let the nostalgia wash over me like a wave.

Find your glimmer.

EMDR can help your mind and body remember moments of connection and calm, just as it can help to unwind traumatic memories. Reach out to learn more.

Did you know EMDR can reduce chronic pain? For many cancer survivors, pain lingers long after treatment ends — neuropathy, scar tissue pain, or treatment-related discomfort.

There is a distinct link between chronic pain and psychological trauma. A 2024 study stated the prevalence between chronic pain and psychological trauma ranges from 24% to over 80%. EMDR can reduce this pain!

🔍 EMDR works by addressing how the brain and body store pain memories, helping reduce suffering and restore quality of life.

A significant medical diagnosis doesn’t just impact the person with the diagnosis. The role of caregivers is precious, important, and it can also be deeply stressful. Many caregivers report feelings of burnout, stress and worry—and this is NOT something about which to feel ashamed. A caregiver's job is hard! It can be isolating, disorienting, physically demanding, and even more complicated when the relationship is already taxed by trauma. This post is for you. I hope you’ve heard it a dozen times over today, but if you haven’t: you are appreciated beyond measure, and you deserve support, too.

I remember distinctly when I learned of my Mom’s diagnosis, both times. I remember what it felt like to have my ears hear the word “cancer” and then fade out the rest, realizing my Mom wasn’t immortal afterall. I remember how I showed up to a meeting with my clinical supervisor and sat there frozen.

For those of you bearing witness to a loved one’s fight, I see you. Walking alongside them can be traumatic, too. I was you. I’m here for you.

💗 This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, let’s celebrate survivors, support those in treatment, and hold space for the vulnerable work of addressing the medical trauma of treatment itself.

Medical trauma is real: surgeries, chemo, radiation, endless waiting for results, the guarded hope of clinical trials, and then the overwhelm of relentless decision-making through it all. This all leaves lasting imprints on the nervous system.

EMDR has a beautiful way of soothing the nervous system, even if you or a loved one is in the midst of treatment. When you’re ready, know I’m here to answer your questions, and help you tend to your emotional healing. ✌️
