How we talk about ADHD matters more than we sometimes realize.

Children often hear two very different messages:
“I can’t do it—it’s my ADHD.”
Or, “That’s just an excuse.”

Neither message helps children grow.

In the latest episode of the ADHD Connect Podcast, I discuss a healthier, more helpful way to think about ADHD—one that acknowledges that some things are harder while still helping children build skills and confidence over time.

When we shift the conversation from blame or resignation to support and skill-building, children are far more likely to succeed.

For children with ADHD, goal-setting can feel overwhelming without structure. Big goals quickly turn into frustration.

That’s why we focus on:

✔ SMART goals (clear and specific)
✔ Breaking tasks into small, manageable steps
✔ Visual supports to track progress
✔ Celebrating effort — not just outcomes
✔ Teaching flexibility when setbacks happen

When children experience success in small ways, they begin to believe, “I can do this.”

And that belief matters.

If your child is struggling with follow-through, focus, or organization, you don’t have to navigate it alone. I offer ADHD evaluations and support for families in Lee’s Summit, along with practical parenting resources designed specifically for children with ADHD.

One of the most misunderstood ADHD behaviors is difficulty getting started.

When a child isn’t initiating a task, adults often assume:
• They’re being oppositional
• They don’t care
• They’re procrastinating on purpose

But task initiation is an executive functioning skill. For many children and teens with ADHD, the gap between “I need to do this” and actually starting feels enormous.

Instead of asking:
💭 “Why aren’t you doing it?”

Try asking:
👉🏼“What’s making it hard to get started?”

That question opens the door to support instead of conflict. Initiation struggles aren’t about character. They’re about capacity. And capacity can be supported.

Why is my child refusing… again?

If you’ve ever asked your child with ADHD to do something simple—brush their teeth, start homework, feed the dog—and been met with avoidance, negotiation, or a flat-out “no,” you’re not alone. And no, it’s not always defiance.

In this episode of ADHD Connect, I’m breaking down the real reasons kids with ADHD refuse tasks—and what to do instead.
💡 Overwhelm
💡 Trouble with transitions
💡 Low motivation
💡 Mental fatigue
💡 Anxiety and more

Plus, I’ll walk you through a simple strategy to identify the behavior patterns in your home and how to shift your response so things don’t escalate.

Sound familiar? Many kids with ADHD struggle most when the world gets quiet.

Help them manage worry thoughts with tools like:

🧘 Mindfulness or breathing exercises

🌙 Why is sleep so hard for kids with ADHD?
Because ADHD doesn’t turn off at bedtime.

In Episode 19 of the ADHD Connect Podcast, Dr. Tish Taylor shares why up to 75% of kids and teens with ADHD struggle with sleep, and what parents can actually do to help.

✅ Calm wind-down routines
✅ What to know about melatonin
✅ Managing racing thoughts at bedtime
✅ The role of CBT-I (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia)
✅ And why sleep isn’t a luxury—it’s a support.

We’ve also pulled together a helpful infographic that breaks it all down 👇
🖼️ Save it, share it, print it—whatever helps you build better nights (and better mornings).
