Giving Tuesday

Dear Friends,
My name is Amy Ansley. I’m an elementary school counselor, wife, and mom to two amazing kids, ages 9 and 6. In December 2023, my life changed instantly when I was diagnosed with Stage 2 lobular carcinoma. I’d found a lump during a routine self-exam. At first, doctors weren’t concerned, but after a mammogram, ultrasound, and finally a biopsy, I was shocked to learn it was cancer.
We turned to The University of Kansas Health System, and in January 2024, I underwent a double mastectomy. Lymph node testing revealed I would also need chemotherapy. That’s when the emotional weight of my diagnosis truly hit, and my biggest worry became how to explain it to my children. What many people don’t realize is that a cancer diagnosis doesn’t just bring fear, it brings grief. Grief for the life you thought you’d have, for the way your body is changing, and for the sense of security that’s suddenly gone.
Before my first treatment, a hospital social worker connected me with Children’s Program Director and Child Life Specialist, Annie Seal at Turning Point. That phone call changed everything. Annie spent over an hour helping me find age-appropriate ways to talk to my kids and offered emotional support I didn’t even know I needed.
Since then, Turning Point has been a cornerstone of healing for our family. I joined “Coffee Talk” sessions—a space to connect and be heard by others going through similar challenges. My kids attended Turning Point’s summer day camp and absolutely loved it. They’re already counting down to next year’s day camp.
Through Turning Point, we’ve accessed resources on grief, self-care, meditation, and managing emotional and physical changes. This community has brought us comfort, strength, and peace during the hardest season of our lives.
All of this has been available at no cost, thanks to generous donors. Turning Point gave me hope and helped my children feel supported and safe.
If my story resonates with you, I invite you to make a gift to Turning Point. Your support ensures other families and individuals navigating serious illness can access these life-changing programs, free of charge.

Thank you for helping Turning Point change lives, just as it changed ours.

Staff Spotlight: Lizzie Wright • Social Worker/Program Director

What is your background/training/education?
I have bachelor’s and master’s degrees in social work from The University of Kansas.

What did you do prior to working at Turning Point?
I began my career in child welfare, working with families to reduce the risk of foster
care placement. Later, I worked in private adoption as a birth parent social worker,
where I witnessed many powerful adoption stories – including being present for a
few births. In 2011, I became a social work case manager at The University of Kansas Health System Cancer Center. It was through that role that I first learned about Turning Point and frequently referred patients and families for additional support during their cancer treatment. In 2016, I had the opportunity to take a full-time position with Turning Point as the Program Director.

What are your responsibilities at Turning Point?
I coordinate all adult programs at Turning Point and work closely with a team of
inspiring and knowledgeable facilitators. I enjoy bringing innovative programs to participants and families to help support them. I meet with new participants and families to help connect them with programs and resources that best fit their needs. One of the most meaningful parts of my work is facilitating “The Last Chapter: Documenting Your Pre- and Post-Death Decisions,” a 4-week series where I’ve had the privilege of sharing deep, impactful conversations.

Fun facts about you:
I have been lucky enough to be married for 12 years to my best friend, Rusty. We have one son, Linden, one daughter, Willa, and one beloved dog, Huck. I enjoy traveling and spending time with friends and family, specifically my 2 nieces and 2 nephews. I am a lover of true crime, and I spend much of the year planning my Halloween costume.
