A bursa is a fluid-filled sac that overlies various regions in the body between bones and tendons to reduce friction and movement. The trochanteric bursa is located on the outer part of the hip that overlies the greater trochanter and inflammation of the bursa is known as trochanteric bursitis.
Various causes for trochanteric bursitis include sports-related activities, overuse, gait abnormality, trauma, or injury. Symptoms may include pain on the outer side of the hip which increases with prolonged walking or stairs, pain laying on the affected area, tenderness to touch, and stiffness.
There are many different treatment options for trochanteric bursitis from rest and ice, stretching and physical therapy, anti-inflammatory and corticosteroid medication, and surgery.
