🍼 Not every baby can begin feeding by mouth, but every baby deserves the chance—the Milk Drops program is leading the way.

🎉 Recently recognized by the ICN Development Care Team for their outstanding work, the Milk Drop program and Milk Lab technicians have helped to make the program sustainable and systematic to be equitable to all babies.

The program involves offering a few drops of breast milk or formula from a syringe to these fragile babies, providing a positive oral sensory experience that promotes feeding readiness. This practice also allows parents to engage with their babies early on, helping them learn their baby's cues and prepare for future feeding interactions.

A critical part of the program is the work done by dietetic technicians in the Milk Lab, who prepare syringes with breast milk or formula daily. Their efforts ensure safe, individualized nutrition for the babies while relieving nurses so they can focus more on patient care. The Milk Lab also produces specialized feeds for other infants throughout the ICN, pediatric unit, and birthing pavilion, including fortified breast milk and pasteurized donor milk when needed.

🐾Mav here! Change can be hard, but with a great support system and some time, it can become a little less scary and overwhelming. When Winnie and I transitioned to our new homes, it included lots of new sights and smells. For me, one of them was a whole flock of chickens. It took some time to get used to them, but with some training and spending more time around them, I have come to realize they are my friends.

A Dartmouth Health Children’s pediatrician, along with a group of her colleagues, was a finalist for a national award for the Climate Informed Pediatric Care program. Cheryl Anderson, MD, working with colleagues from the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth and NH Healthy Climate, is among the top 10 contenders for ecoAmerica’s 2025 American Climate Leadership Awards.

“Though it is a very real thing with very real, and potentially devastating, health impacts, climate change has become a sensitive and even political subject for many, even in the context of a healthcare provider advising their patient,” Dr. Anderson said. “In pediatrics, we frame conversations with kids and their families about climate concerns in a way that is clear we’re concerned about their well-being, not preaching at them. For example, we now have much hotter summers in New Hampshire than ever before, so we advise patients to avoid playing outside on the hottest days, or to be mindful of air quality alerts for kids with asthma and allergies.”

Our physician-in-chief, Keith Loud, MD, MSc, has penned an op-ed about how cuts to Medicaid will affect children and their families who rely on this coverage in New Hampshire and beyond. Dr. Loud relates the story of his patient Lucas, who has numerous complex medical needs, including Down syndrome, autism spectrum disorder, seizures, and has undergone several major surgeries in his 14 years of life.

"Lucas’ family carries private health insurance, which is supplemented by New Hampshire Medicaid," Dr. Loud writes. "Without this crucial supplement, his parents fear Lucas would need to be placed in a residential facility, likely located out-of-state, which would rip the family apart, causing immeasurable harm to Lucas’ wellbeing. Many families would face similarly unthinkable outcomes if stripped of their coverage."

🐾Winnie here! We are so lucky to have some fun distractions throughout our treatment rooms. Distractions are things that let us hold our focus and help us relax and they are so important during procedures. I have been practicing changing the color of the bubble tube in our pediatric echo room at Dartmouth Hitchcock Clinics Manchester.
