🍼 Not every baby can begin feeding by mouth, but every baby deserves the chance—the Milk Drops program is leading the way.
🎉 Recently recognized by the ICN Development Care Team for their outstanding work, the Milk Drop program and Milk Lab technicians have helped to make the program sustainable and systematic to be equitable to all babies.
The program involves offering a few drops of breast milk or formula from a syringe to these fragile babies, providing a positive oral sensory experience that promotes feeding readiness. This practice also allows parents to engage with their babies early on, helping them learn their baby's cues and prepare for future feeding interactions.
A critical part of the program is the work done by dietetic technicians in the Milk Lab, who prepare syringes with breast milk or formula daily. Their efforts ensure safe, individualized nutrition for the babies while relieving nurses so they can focus more on patient care. The Milk Lab also produces specialized feeds for other infants throughout the ICN, pediatric unit, and birthing pavilion, including fortified breast milk and pasteurized donor milk when needed.
