This May, during Mental Health Awareness Month, we’re taking time to highlight something especially important for the women we serve: how mental health and pregnancy are deeply connected.
Pregnancy is a beautiful and transformative season, but it can also bring stress, uncertainty, and emotional changes. Understanding the difference between mental health and mental health conditions can help expecting moms, and those who support them, navigate this season with compassion and confidence.
💚 Mental health is something everyone has
It includes your emotional, psychological, and social well-being. During pregnancy, mental health can influence sleep, energy levels, decision-making, and overall wellness.
💚 Mental health conditions are diagnosable
Conditions like anxiety, depression, or PTSD can affect expectant moms just as they can anyone else. In fact, many women experience emotional challenges during or after pregnancy.
💚 Good mental health and mental illness can coexist
A mom may have a diagnosed condition and still experience moments of peace, joy, and strength through support, treatment, and the right tools.
💚 Poor mental health doesn’t always mean mental illness
Fatigue, hormonal changes, stress, or life transitions during pregnancy can all impact how a mom feels without indicating a formal diagnosis.
💚 Simple ways to care for mental health during pregnancy
Journaling, gentle movement, prayer, deep breathing, rest, talking with trusted friends, and seeking community support can all make a meaningful difference.
💚 Professional support is available
Therapy and counseling are helpful for anyone, especially moms navigating big changes physically, emotionally, and spiritually.
