The Mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities offering them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendships with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community. At SOBC we strive to provide a variety of sports to for our athletes to chose from and promote physical activity and positive social interactions, while promoting personal growth and independence. We are currently working to add a recreational swimming program. Please read below for a description of the sports offered by SOBC.
Basketball: (December – March) SOBC offers traditional basketball teams, modified 3 on 3 teams, and a skills division. As with all Special Olympic sports, SOBC has a basketball program suitable for athletes of all ability levels. (2018 registration is closed)
Track & Field: (Mid-March – Early June) The track and field program offers walking and running events in short, middle and long distances, as well as relay teams! Throwing events include softball, javelin, and shotput. Running long jump and standing long jump are also part of the program. Athletes choose events best suited to their individual skill level and compete against athletes within their skill division. This is a great opportunity for exercise and socializing with friends, and competitions are optional. Athletes have the opportunity to participate in Summer Games which is a 3-day state-wide competition held in Terre Haute.
Cycling: (Mid-March – Early June) Whether athletes ride traditional bikes or modified bikes such as 3-wheelers, this is a fun physical and social activity. Athletes get together to practice and improve their riding skills, and they have an opportunity to compete in the annual cycling meet hosted by SOBC as well as compete at Summer Games!
