Today is National Wear Red Day, a day to raise awareness and show support for women’s heart health. Heart disease is the number one killer of women, and awareness can make all the difference. Knowing the signs, understanding your risk, and making heart-healthy choices are small steps that can have a big impact.

Our staff wore red today to show support and remind our community that heart health matters.

Dress in layers, protect your extremities, and always warm up before heading outside. "Muscles are tighter in the cold, so you really want to do a good dynamic warm-up before you start exercising vigorously,” says sports medicine physician Peter M. Loescher, MD, of Alice Peck Day Memorial Hospital.

Remember to:
• Remove layers as soon as you start sweating. It's easier to add layers back than to dry clothes covered in sweat.
• Cover your mouth with a scarf or face covering. This helps add moisture to the air you breathe, which is especially helpful if you have asthma or other health conditions.
• Stay indoors on days with extremely cold temperatures or windy conditions.

APD and CCBA continued The Four Pillars of Health series with a session focused on exercise, led by Kirstin Eastman, Manager of Rehabilitation at APD, and CCBA Fitness Manager Jesse Davis. The session highlighted how regular movement supports strength, balance, mobility, and independence at every stage of life.

Exercise doesn’t need to be perfect or extreme. Small, consistent steps and movement you enjoy can make a big difference over time.

In closing, Davis shared these simple tips about exercise:

• It’s never too late to start.
• Make sure you use good technique and form.
• Keep showing up.
• Start small and play the long game. This is a lifetime habit change.
• Lifestyle change can be hard. Stay with it!

Join us on Wednesday, February 4 for The Four Pillars of Health: Nutrition from 12 pm to 1 pm and 6 pm to 7 pm.

Alice Peck Day Memorial Hospital

Our mission is to improve the health and wellbeing of our community. Since 1932, Alice Peck Day Memorial Hospital (APD) has been the community hospital of the Upper Valley, delivering high-quality health care in a friendly environment where patients come first.

Mrs. Alice Peck Day was a fifth generation resident of Lebanon, NH. Upon her death in 1927, she bequeathed her family home to found a cottage hospital in 1927. Dr. Arthur Burnham, one of the area's leading physicians at the time, helped lead the drive for incorporation, and APD opened its doors for the first time on February 1, 1932.

Today, APD cares for 20,000 patients per year from communities throughout New Hampshire and Vermont. Long-known for providing highly personalized care, APD also offers a wide range of specialized services which include orthopaedic surgery, neurosurgery, pain management, primary and family care, senior care, and women’s care. The majority of APD’s outpatient services moved into the new Multi-Specialty Clinic in the fall of 2017. Through APD’s affiliation with Dartmouth-Hitchcock Health, we affirm our commitment to creating a sustainable health system to improve the lives of the people and communities we serve for generations to come. Please visit AlicePeckDay.org for more information, and join us on LinkedIn, Twitter and Instagram.
