Renato Santiago Parungao M.D., “Dr. P”, 83, of Hernando, Florida, passed away surrounded by loved ones. Born and raised in Manila, Philippines, Renato lived a life defined by dedication, talent, and deep love for both his family and his work.
A gifted and accomplished surgeon, Renato immigrated to the United States with his wife, Myrna, to pursue their medical careers. They began their journey in New Jersey for their internships, continued to Syracuse for residency, then Cleveland to begin practicing. Shortly after, they found their beloved home in Kewanee, Illinois—a town that would forever hold Renato’s heart.
In Kewanee, Renato built a remarkable career and an even more remarkable legacy. He adored the hospital and the community he served. His commitment was unmatched; during one fierce winter storm, he even drove his snowmobile to the hospital to ensure his patients received care. Although his medical career was cut short at age 60 due to a stroke, his impact across decades of service endures through the lives he touched.
Renato was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Kristen and his brothers, Oscar and David.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Myrna; his children, Allan Jay M.D., Rene Sherwin M.D., and Lee Jennifer M.D.; his siblings Josephina, Luzviminda, Teresita, Zoraida, Arsenio, and Rustico; and many nieces and nephews who adored him.
Known lovingly as “Papa” to his grandchildren, he cherished Rielly and Hailey (children of Sherwin and Cathy), Rianne, Amelia, James Patton, and Quaid (children of Jennifer and John Murphy), and Rebekah, Carolyn, and Noah (children of Allan and Kate). Being their Papa brought him immense pride and joy.
Before discovering his passion for golf, Renato was an avid hunter and fisherman. Once he found golf, it became one of the great loves of his life. He played more rounds than anyone could count and proudly holds the Midland Country Club record for scoring both an eagle and a hole-in-one in the same round. He had multiple hole-in-ones throughout his life and was famous for never leaving a putt short.
Renato will be remembered for his brilliance and dedication, but even more so for the joy he brought to others. His playful spirit, infectious laughter, and quick wit made him beloved by all who knew him. His legacy of compassion, humor, and excellence will live on through his family and the countless lives he touched.
